Men’s 100 meter freestyle at the 2013 World Championships Trials as reported on swimswam live results coverage:

Gotta love the bravado from the young US Sprinter. But we all know how that ended up for the French in 2008 and for the US in 2012. The dark horse here is Russia, I think Vlad wins the 50 free and takes bronze in the 100, leading Russia in the 400 free relay to an upset over the US for bronze.
Predicted order of finish –
1. France
2. Australia
3. Russia
4. US
I’d take out Rus from the medalists. Last year they were just too lucky with Australia choking and their coached made a blunder.
I don’t know the order, but my gut feeling is it would be FRA-AUS-USA in no particular order.
I think a focused Australia wins it over France with a less than 100% Agnel.
No gold this year for the Us relay . The aussies will want to be on top again ; the French want to stay on the top and the Russians want to get a better medal . It will be tough . As BOBO said , it may well depend on the first relay swimmer ( If Anthony gets a 48 low ) , they can battle till the end for a medal ( especially if Nathan get the anchor ). We will see ……this Relay needs new young swimmers within 2 and 3 years ( Like the Bolles young talents ) .
We do this every year. Nationalism aside, it is foolish to bank on any relay for this gold. France in 2008, 2009, Aus in 2012. This is the relay where the unbeatables on paper are cursed because it never adds up.
Russia, Aussie, France and US all have a shot and we can debate who has a better shot. I would say the liability side for France and Aussie is depth. They need to have 4 guys running hot at the same time. And we’ve seen over and over and over that happens less often than not after the athletes have already peaked once in a prior training cycle and bank on it being right on again. I would say… Read more »
Australia has depth last year too.
The problem was two swimmers were not swimming as they were supposed to instead of only one: Magnussen choked and Roberts swam a full second slower.
The Australian coaches were at fault: they should have replaced Roberts with D’orsogna who was “hot” and swam brilliant time in the prelims.
If only they had replaced Roberts with D’orsogna, they could have won bronze instead of fourth even with Magnussen choking and swam full second slower.
47.7 x4 = 3:10.8, I don’t think that will be enough to get the gold this year.
I don’t like only to add the times to predict the results. It would be too easy! Trust in your feeling too.
Anyway, I repeat here France will win in Barcelona. Australia will be close. And USA is now much better placed in my opinion for a podium after yesterday’s final.
The best American relay team for me would be Anthony Ervin, Ryan Lochte, Jimmy Feigen and Nathan Adrian. If you want to win, Anthony Ervin is the key. He has to swim 48 low. If not, you will be behind the 2 or 3 other big nations after the first leg and it would be very tough to come back.
I wasn’t adding up the times; I was commenting on Feigen’s prediction that 47.7 average for 4 swimmers will win the gold. Calcluating 47.7 average x4 is the 3:10.8; I’m just saying that the winning time will be faster than that.
