European OW Champion Kirill Abrosimov Tries Training in a Quarry

Russian open water specialist Kirill Abrosimov has had enough of swimming in a 5-meter pool with stretch cords. The 2016 European Open Water Champs 5km champion took to a nearby quarry recently to get an open water workout in, another story of a swimmer getting creative to keep training during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“After a month and a half of swimming in a five meters pool, I finally did a full-time open water workout,” said Abrosimov in an Instagram post. The post includes photos and videos of him starting his workout in the quarry and of the small pool he had been doing resistance work in for the six weeks prior.

Abrosimov told Russian media outlet Moscow Region Today that the quarry water was 16 degrees Celsius, which is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

“The weather was warm for several days, and I decided to try the water in a quarry located near the country house,” said Kirill. “Put on a neoprene wetsuit and go. Each stroke, each forward movement brought great joy. Finally, I had a good workout. It was an hour of bliss!”
