Brazil’s selection meet for this winter’s Short Course World Championships, called the Jose Finkel Trophy, is underway in Guaratingueta, and the first breach of the record books has already happened.
Etiene Medeiros broke the South American record in the 100 backstroke, going 57.53 out of the preliminaries. The previous record was set back in 2009 at the Berlin World Cup. In that meet, Fabiola Molina went 57.63, at that time a reduction of the record by over a second. Molina and Medeiros are still the only two South American women ever under 58 seconds in the race.
That time will also qualify Medeiros for the Brazilian national team heading to Short Course World Championships in Doha, Qatar this coming December.
