NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Washington women’s swimming and diving 2016 graduate Emma Gaquin has been named an Atlantic 10 Postgraduate Scholarship winner, the conference announced on Thursday.
Gaquin is one of 14 scholarship recipients, one from each member institution of the A-10. The other recipients include: Daniel Samet of Davidson, Andrew Lightner of Dayton, Colin Phillips of Duquesne, Steve Sholdra of Fordham, Evan Porcella of George Mason, Kendra Heyer of La Salle, Rebecca Quirie of Massachusetts, Michael Casey of Rhode Island, Emily Gitman of Richmond, Shannon Haberman of St. Bonaventure, Lauren Hehir of Saint Joseph’s, Brianna Lore of Saint Louis and Michal Voscek of VCU. Each student-athlete will receive $5,000 toward continuing their education in a graduate or professional program.
Performance on the playing field, in the classroom and in the community were considered during the selection process.
As an undergraduate, Gaquin landed on the A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll six times in her career while being selected as a member of GW’s Athletics Academic Dean’s List in each semester as a Colonial en route to a final GPA of 3.70.
The freestyler also had a successful career in the pool, earning points for GW at the 2014 A-10 Championships in the 1,650-yard free. Gaquin’s final two seasons in the Buff and Blue were cut short due to injury, but Gaquin remained a supportive teammate.
Gaquin is enrolled in a five-year, joint BS/MPH program within GW’s Milken Institute School of Public Health. The Hamilton, Massachusetts, native will utilize the scholarship as she completes the final year of the program to graduate with a masters in public health with a concentration in communications and marketing.
“I am extremely honored to receive the A-10 postgraduate scholarship,” said Gaquin. “It makes me feel connected to my athletic roots even though I am no longer a student-athlete. I really appreciate the work done by Shelby McKay and Danya Ellman in Educational Support Services, along with Athletics Director Patrick Nero, who have helped find scholarships for me.”
Over the summer, Gaquin will complete her practicum working with an HIV research study at the Southeast STD Clinic. The recent graduate also joined a research team that studies how stigma affects behavioral health in the District.
