One of the top recruits in the Class of 2026 showed why that is the case at the Virginia Swimming Senior Championships earlier this month.

Emerson Callis, who has committed to NC State and swims for Quest Swimming, won seven individual titles in the women’s competition, setting personal bests in six of those victories.

Callis won the 500 freestyle (4:44.67), 1000 free (9:47.60), 1650 free (16:36.06), 100 butterfly (53.21) 200 fly (1:55.62) and the 200 individual medley (1:58.82), all in personal best times. She also won the 400 IM in 4:13.10.

A few days prior to the meet, Callis won VHSL Class 4 state championships in the 100 fly (53.67) and the 100 back (53.81).

Callis is SwimSwam’s No. 11 ranked recruit in the girls’ high school class of 2026. She currently has the second-fastest time in the country this season for the 16-year-old age group in both the 200 fly and 400 IM, the third-fastest time in the 200 IM and the fourth-fastest time in both the 500 free and 1000 free.

In the men’s competition, Andy Roose of Williamsburg Aquatic Club and Gabe Nunziata of Old Dominion Aquatic Club had outstanding meets.

A Virginia Tech signee, Roose won four individual events, setting personal best times in winning the 200 back (1:42.43), 100 fly (48.26) and the 200 fly (1:47.08). He also won the 100 back in a time of 47.84.

Signed with Tennessee, Nunziata set personal bests in winning the 100 breast (52.47), 200 breast (1:53.73) and 200 IM (1:44.97). He also set personal bests during three second-place finishes in the 400 IM (3:48.74), 50 free (20.40) and the 100 free (44.19).

His time in the 200 breast is the fourth-fastest in the country this season for the 18-year-old age group, while his 100 breast time is the sixth-fastest.

This followed up his performance at the state high school meet where he won the 100 breast (53.23) and the 200 IM (personal best time of 1:47.24).

Team-wise, Nova of Virginia swept the combined, women’s and men’s titles at a meet that came less than a month after the state’s high school meet.

Other individual standouts were:

  • In the women’s competition, Lane Francis of Nova of Virginia won the 100 back (54.19) and 200 back (1:57.18) in personal best times, and finished third in the 50 free with a personal best time (23.20).
  • Anna Shnowske, an Ohio State commit from 757 Swim, won the 50 free (22.97) and the 100 free (49.49) in personal best times. She also was second in the 200 free (1:47.57), 100 fly (personal best time of 53.48) and 200 fly (personal best time of 1:56.31).
  • In the men’s competition, Austin Temple of Tide Swimming was the sprint freestyle king, taking the 50 free (20.25) and the 100 free (44.14).
