Olympic medalists Elizabeth Beisel and Natalie Coughlin have each been added to the lineup of Olympic medalists that will compete at the Atlanta Classic Swim Meet in just over a week in Atlanta, Georgia.
The meet will be hosted at Georgia Tech’s McAuley Aquatic Center – a pool originally built to host the swimming portion of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. The pool served as the host for both the men’s and women’s NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships in March.
While the winningest Olympian of all-time Michael Phelps backed out of the meet on Monday, his name has been replaced on the list of headlining participants by two other Olympic medalists: Natalie Coughlin and Elizabeth Beisel.
Coughlin, who trains at California Aquatics with Nathan Adrian, who will also be at the meet, is a 12-time Olympic medalist, which ties her for the most medals by a female swimmer with Jenny Thompson and Dara Torres.
Beisel, who is based out of the University of Florida post-grad group, won a pair of medals at the 2012 Olympics: silver in the 400 IM and bronze in the 200 backstroke. The University of Florida is the same training base as Caeleb Dressel, another participant in this meet, though he’s still an undergraduate. The University of Florida is listed among the teams participating in the meet, though no further details about who that includes beyond Dressel will be available until entry lists come out later this week.
