ECU Sweeps Tri-Meet, UNCA Comes From Behind To Top Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – The East Carolina women’s swimming and diving team improved to 7-1 on the season following a sweep at the Georgia Southern Tri-Meet on Friday. The Pirates defeated Georgia Southern 208-91 and beat UNC Asheville 206-93.

“It was good to grab two more wins on the season,” ECU Head Coach Matthew Jabs said. “We are looking forward to the break from school, which will allow us to put 100 percent focus on the pool and get ready for the final stretch of the season.”

On the day, ECU set two new pool records with Heidi Bruining in the 200-freestyle posting a time of 1:52.02 finishing three seconds ahead of Anna Marcotti of UNC Asheville. Bruining also captured top honors in the 100 freestyle (51.66) and 200 IM (2:05.58).

The 400-freestyle relay team, made up of Carlie ClementsMikayla DurkinLaura Kellberg and Bruining, set a pool record with a time of 3:29.62 finishing three seconds ahead of UNC Asheville. ECU’s 200 medley relay A team finished first with a time of 1:46.04, while the B team placed third with a time of 1:47.99.

Frida Zuniga Guzman picked up four wins on the day claiming top diving honors in the 1-meter (275.45) and 3-meter dives (277.15) over Georgia Southern and UNC Asheville. Olivia Templeton (239.25) and Kinsley Baker (238.75) finished third and fourth in the 1-meter dive, while Baker took third in the 3-meter (234.05).

Sadie Covington (10:36.76) and Alyssa Heffelfinger (10:39.37) finished second and third in the 1000 freestyle, while Clements (1:55.98) and Sophie Benkusky (1:56.81) claimed third and fourth in the 200 free.

Laura Lopez (57.27) and Alayna Carlson (58.53) earned first and second place finishes in the 100 backstroke and Kaylee Hamblin won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.63. A trio of Pirates placed in the Top 4 of the 200 butterfly in Emilee Hamblin (second/2:05.03), Sara Kalawska (third/2:07.85) and Elena Dinehart (fourth/2:07.92).

Durkin (24.22) and Kellberg (24:58) finished second and third in the 50 freestyle, Dinehart (2:05.41), Clements (2:05.50) and Carlson (2:06.00) swept the top three spots in the 200 backstroke. Kaylee Hamblin won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:20.22 and Emilee Hamblin placed first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:06.20. Kalawska picked up the win in the 100 butterfly with posting a time of 57.03.

The Pirates return to action on Friday, Dec. 20 when the participate in the FAU Invite. The event is set to begin at 10 a.m. (ET) in Boca Raton, Fla.

STATESBORO, Ga. – UNC Asheville Women’s Swimming and Diving completed a wild comeback on Friday (Dec. 13) to top Georgia Southern 150-149, while splitting the double dual with a 206-93 loss to East Carolina.

Asheville trailed by as many as 25 in the contest with Georgia Southern, rallying for the victory with wins over the Eagles in the 1000 free, 200 free, 200 fly, 500 free and 100 fly while sweeping Georgia Southern in  the 200 back and the 200 IM.

The meet began with the three-meter dive, where Asheville was paced by freshman Vivian Fougeron in fifth (216.75) and fifth-year senior Jade Canady in sixth (210.75) while Amelia Ward (195.85), Leigha Travis (191.65) and Kindal Culpepper (170.75) rounded out the event. The quartet of Savanna BushAlyssa JacksonChloe McDonald and Anna Marcotti would pick up points with a fifth-place finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:48.84, while the team of Danai GkogkosiGracelyn CoxTaylor Smith and Caroline Crouse took seventh in 1:51.30. Alessia CunegattiMiriam WheatleyAnna Kate Halligan and Olivia Ciancimino also swam the event in 1:54.43. Caitlin Hefner would pick up some key points with a win in the 1000 free in 10:31.86, while Adams took sixth in 10:57.18. Kathryn Walters (10:57.63) and Celine Petruschke (11:02.69) also swam the event. Marcotti earned points for the Bulldogs with a second-place finish in the 200 free in 1:55.16, while Gkogkosi also earned points with a sixth-place finish in 1:58.30. Ava Kilpatrick took 10th in 2:01.18, while Rose Sciaudone also swam the event in 2:01.96. Bush took fourth in the 100 back to score points with a time of 59.27, while Andie Quisumbing finished sixth in 1:00.89 and Cunegatti placed seventh in 1:01.06. Beatrice Cocconcelli (1:06.51) and Jackson (1:06.70) each earned points finishing third and fourth respectively, while Cox finished ninth in 1:09.48 and Smith took 10th in 1:09.81. Wheatley also swam the event in 1:11.98. Asheville picked up its second win of the meet with Riley Edmundson taking the 200 fly in 2:04.99, while McDonald earned points with a fifth-place finish in 2:10.54. Julie Lahiff took seventh in the event in 2:13.17, while Tess Peny also finished 10th in 2:16.72. Cocconcelli paced Asheville with points in the 50 free with a fifth-place finish in 24.69 seconds, while Quisumbing finished seventh in 25.19 seconds. Kilpatrick (25.67) and Ciancimino (25.85) finished 10th and 11th in the event respectively.

Ward led the Bulldogs in the one-meter event, scoring points in a sixth-place finish with a score of 207.30. Fougeron (198.20), Canady (189.90), Travis (180.50) and Culpepper (155.75) rounded out the event for Asheville. Marcotti would score points with a third-place finish in the 100 free in 53.69 seconds, while Gkogkosi would also earn points with a fifth-place finish in 54.64 seconds. Kilpatrick (56.32) and Ciancimino (58.97) finished back-to-back for a second time, taking 11th and 12th respectively in the event. Asheville picked up 16 key points in the 200 back finishing 4-5-6 with Bush (2:07.61), Cunegatti (2:08.26) and Adams (2:08.70), while Peny also took 12th in the event in 2:18.80. Edmundson paced the Bulldogs for points in the 200 breast with a third-place finish in 2:24.69, while Jackson took seventh in 2:27.86. Cox (2:31.79), Halligan (2:34.69) and Lahiff (2:31.96) rounded out the event for Asheville. Hefner earned crucial points in the 500 free with a second-place finish in 5:10.53, while Petruschke (5:20.41) and Sciaudone (5:23.25) took seventh and eighth respectively. Walters also swam the event in 5:27.86 for an 11th-place finish. McDonald posted her best finish of the day for points with a second-place finish in the 100 fly in 58.02 seconds, while Quisumbing scored points in fourth place with a time of 58.91 and Smith earned points finishing sixth in 59.57 seconds. Crouse also swam the event in 1:01.06 for an 11th-place finish.

Through 14 events combined, Asheville trailed Georgia Southern 140-127, having trailed by as many as 25 points on the day.

The tide began to turn for the Bulldogs in the 200 IM as Cunegatti (2:08.89) and Edmundson (2:10.28) finished second and third for points, while Halligan also scored team points in sixth in 2:14.93 while Lahiff also finished seventh in 2:15.82. Peny also swam the event in 2:20.92. Headed into the final event of the meet, Asheville had narrowed the Georgia Southern lead to 143-139. Asheville would take the lead for good in the 400 free relay, with the quartet of Cocconcelli, Gkogkosi, Hefner and Marcotti overtaking Georgia Southern with a 3:32.93 finish for 11 points. Quisumbing, Crouse, Kilpatrick and Jackson also swam the event in 3:44.83.

Asheville faced a tough opponent in East Carolina, with the matchup highlighted by Hefner’s win in the 1000 free and Edmundson’s victory in the 200 fly.

“We are incredibly proud of the fight in this team,” said head coach Elizabeth Lykins. “EVERY single person on this team contributed today and every race and dive mattered. This is the true example of teamwork bringing out the best in each of us.”

The Bulldogs (2-2) are back in action on Sunday (Dec. 15) as the distance swimmers take on the CSCAA Open Water 5K. The action begins at 10:00 a.m. from Biscayne Bay, Fla.

Statesboro, Ga. — The Georgia Southern Eagles Swim & Dive Team placed third in their home tri-meet this past Friday afternoon (December 13th). The Eagles fell to East Carolina 208.00 – 91.00 and came up just short against UNC-Asheville 150.00 – 149.00.

To start the meet, Georgia Southern placed two divers in the top four with Karlee Wells scoring a 260.15 for second place and Abby Ounsworth at 219.05 for fourth place. Wells also took second in the 1 meter dive with her score of 259.05, her second-best of the season.

The 50 free saw three Eagles in the top six, including Alyssa Ifill in sixth at 24.76, Abby Wenham in fourth at 24.65, and Chiara Alberti winning the event with her time of 23.90. Another event winner came from Aliie Byerly who won the 100 back with her time of 52.66 as it was her first time competing in the event all season.

Ieva Evaltaite took second in both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes with times of 1:05.30 and 2:22.92. In the relays, Georgia Southern’s top finishers came second in the 200 medley and fourth in the 400 free relays. Finally, in the 100 free, Victoria Kjaerullf and Grace Drawdy took fourth and fifth, respectively, in their first time swimming the event this season. The Eagles next meet comes in 2025 when they travel to Jacksonville, Fla. for a lone meet against North Florida. The meet is set for 12 pm E.T on January 18th.
