NORFOLK, Va. – The East Carolina women’s swimming team completed a dual meet sweep at Old Dominion picking up a 207-54 victory against the Monarchs and a 134-127 win over William & Mary Saturday afternoon to improve to 9-0 on the season. The diving team captured first place in the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform dives against Liberty.
“We’ve spent most of the season at home, so it was good to get on the road face some adversity and come out on top,” said head coach Matt Jabs. “Thanks to ODU and Coach Miller Livsey for hosting us. Our programs go back a long ways and it’s always good to compete against the Monarchs.
“William and Mary is always a good meet for us. They are a very well coached team, Coach Kellog and his staff had those women ready to compete. The closest meet we’ve been in all year. It was back and forth all meet and it all came down to the last relay, with Mikayla Durkin, Laura Kellberg, Carlie Clements, and Heidi Bruining coming from behind to win the race and the meet.”
Kaylee Hamblin won three events on the day in the 200-medley relay (1:44.26), set the pool record in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.76) and the 200 breaststroke (2:16.79), while Bruining claimed first in the 200 IM (2:05.18) and the 400 free (1:45.07). The Pirates also won every event against the Monarchs.

NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men’s swimming team defeated William & Mary 164-98 on. Saturday at the Scrap Chandler Pool. The women’s team fell to William & Mary 213-48 and East Carolina 207-54.
The men’s 200 medley relay team took first place for the Monarchs as the team of Gustaf Hansson, Dawson Truong, Jamie Cleaver and Zach Redding finished with a time of 1:31.76.
In the men’s 1000 freestyle, ODU secured the top three spots as Yagiz Ari took first with a time of 9:31.72, following him was Grey Bremer with a time of 9:40.49 and taking third was Alexander Schreck finishing in 9:56.05.
Redding took first in the men’s 200 freestyle finishing with a time of 1:42.08 and Ryan Lincicum took second with a time of 1:45.01.
In the men’s 100 backstroke, Hansson took first with a time of 50.25.
Mary Dunworth took fourth in the women’s 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.45.
In the men’s 100 breaststroke, Truong took first finshing with a time of 57.08 and Bryce Mortimer finished in third with a time of 57.44.
Old Dominion took the top three spots in the men’s 200 butterfly as Cleaver placed first with a time of 1:52.76, Schreck followed with a time of 1:55.84 and A.J. Capizzi took third finishing in 1:58.15.
Lauren Masters placed sixth in the women’s 50 freestyle with a time of 24.49.
In the men’s 50 freestyle, Redding placed second with a time of 21.43 and Lincicum took third with a time of 21.68.
In the men’s 100 freestyle, Cleaver placed second with a time of 46.73 and Brice Bounds took third with a time of 47.82.
In the women’s 200 backstroke, Martina Ciriesi placed fourth with a time of 2:06.93.
Ben Schattenberg took second place with a time of 1:53.75 in the men’s 200 backstroke.
In the men’s 200 breaststroke, Mortimer took first with a time of 2:04.80.
In the men’s 500 freestyle, Ari took first with a time of 4:37.08 and Bremer placed second with a time of 4:37.67.
In the women’s 100 butterfly, Masters placed fifth finishing with a time of 58.18.
The Monarchs claimed the top two spots in the men’s 100 butterfly as Cleaver placed first with a time of 49.73 and Truong took second with a time of 51.56.
Mortimer took first in the men’s 200 IM with a time of 1:54.49 and Schattenberg placed third with a time of 1:56.85.
In the men’s 400 freestyle relay, ODU took second and third. The team of Lincicum, Schattenberg, Bounds and Redding took second with a time of 3:08.22. The third place team of Mortimer, Alec Nolet, Ethan Reiser and Bremer finished with a time of 3:12.35.
The Monarchs are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 20 when they host George Mason at noon at the Scrap Chandler Pool.

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary swimming opened its 2024 schedule on the road at Old Dominon as the women’s team picked up a staggering 213-48 victory over the Monarchs and fell just short of the win over East Carolina, 134-127, with the meet coming down to the final relay.
The men’s team fell to host Old Dominion, 164-98, but freshmen continued to shine as Aiden Bond picked up a pair of victories and David Yune earned an individual win, and the duo swam on the winning 400 Free Relay team. The men’s team amassed 16 podium finishes on the day, including the four wins.
The Tribe women won every event against the Monarchs, going 1-2-3 in eight of the fourteen events. Against the Pirates, the Tribe women secured seven victories, sweeping the podium in the 100 Fly.
Kicking off the event, the Tribe men and women each secured second and third place finishes in the 200 Medley Relay. The quartet of Kat Vanbourgondien, Ellie Scherer, Sophia Heilen and Caroline Burgeson led the charge for the women, clocking in at 1:44.64. On the men’s side, the team of Yune, Brock Rempe, Kent Codding and Bond made a 1:31.76 time, finishing less than two tenths of a second behind the winning relay.
Lauren Tucker and Kelsey Katt finished top-two against the Monarchs in the 1000 Free as Tucker posted a 10:24.24 time and Katt logged a 10:32.80 finish. Against the Pirates, the pair finished second and third.
Sarah Dunham took second place against the Pirates with her 1:54.59 time in the 200 Free and earned the win in the event over the Monarchs. Zoe Arakelian (1:57.53) and Julie Anderson (1:57.94) made for a sweep of the podium over ODU.
Freshman Colin Mamaril landed in the top three in the men’s 200 Free, swimming 1:45.40.
Kat Vanbourgondien earned two victories in the 100 Back, finishing first with a time of 56.86. Sarah Rich’s 59.13 finish was good for a spot on the podium against the Monarchs.
In the men’s 100 Back, Aaron Tingley swam a season best 51.75 time for second place and Micah Lowe took the final spot on the podium with his time of 52.36.
Lindsay Juhlin and Ellie Scherer finished top-three in the 100 Breast. Juhlin finished in 1:04.90 and Scherer touched less than a tenth of a second behind with a 1:04.98 time.
Logan McDonald earned silver in the men’s 100 Breast, clocking in at 57.13, less than a tenth of a second away from the first-place Monarch swimmer.
Sophia Heilen and Lauren Klinefelter topped the 200 Fly, clocking in at 2:03.21 and 2:05.97, respectively, each earning a pair of podium finishes. Freshman Clara Bodnar rounded out the podium against the host team, earning third with a 2:08.60 finish.
Caroline Burgeson emerged victorious in the 50 Free, swimming a 24.05. Meghan Rourke earned a spot on the podium with a second-place finish against Old Dominion in 24.42.
One of Bond’s pair of wins came in the men’s 50 Free as he clocked in at 20.80 for first place.
Sarah Dunham won the 100 Free in 51.72, beating the next best time by nearly a second. Burgeson’s 53.06 finish and Rourke’s time of 53.54, swept the podium against the Monarchs.
Bond followed with another victory in his next event, swimming a 45.83 for the win in the 100 Free.
Vanbourgondien earned her second top time of the afternoon in the 200 Back, posting a time of 2:04.21, earning a win against both the Pirates and host Monarchs. Julie Addison also picked up a podium finish against the host team with her third-place time of 2:07.69.
Yune won the 200 Back for the men’s team with a blazing 1:50.55 finish, over three seconds faster than the next-best time. Lowe made another podium appearance with his third-place swim of 1:55.01.
Scherer captured the win against the Monarchs and rounded out the podium against the Pirates in the 200 Breast, swimming a 2:21.54. Natalia Rongione (2:25.55) and Kaitlyn Conover-Emmert (2:26.69) helped to sweep the podium against Old Dominion.
In the men’s 200 Breast, Cole Younger took a second-place spot with his 2:07.30 time and Jono Bennett also earned a spot on the podium with a 2:10.42 finish.
Lauren Tucker earned a pair of wins as she topped the 500 Free with a time of 5:01.47. Sweeping the podium against the Monarchs, Katt (5:08.80) and Kiersten Dagg (5:12.75) each finished in the top three.
In the 500 Free for the men, Will Glass earned a third-place spot with his 4:50.07 time.
The Tribe women went 1-2-3 against both the Pirates and the Monarchs in the 100 Fly. Juhlin earned the win with a 55.56 finish and was followed closely by Heilen’s time of 55.57. Klinefelter made another podium appearance with her 57.90 finish.
Gavin Lamoureux made a bronze finish for the Tribe men in the 100 Fly, clocking in at 51.56.
In the women’s 200 IM, Scherer’s 2:09.88 time and Conover-Emmert’s 2:10.10 finish earned podium spots against the Pirates. Heilen rounded out the top-three against the Monarchs with her 2:10.38 time.
Younger made another bid for silver as he finished the men’s 200 IM with a time of 1:55.99.
The men’s 400 Free Relay picked up a commanding victory as the team of Bond, Yune, Eugenio Massari and McDonald made a 3:05.89 finish, beating the next team by nearly three seconds.
