GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina swimming and diving team won 13 of 16 events enroute to a 205-95 win over UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon inside Minges Natatorium. With the win, the Pirates improved to 4-0 on the season after capturing a quad-meet victory last weekend.
“The team swam and dove great today, and it definitely was a team victory,” head coach Matt Jabs said. “Asheville has been a tough meet for us the last two years. Our girls wanted this one pretty bad and they showed up and showed out today.”
Sophomore Heid Bruining and junior Kaylee Hamblin each won a pair of events for ECU on the afternoon with Bruining claiming the 200 Freestyle (1:52.42) and 200 IM (2:05.80) in come from behind fashion, while Kaylee Hamblin won both the 100 Breaststroke (1:01.85) and 200 Breaststroke (2:15.73). Her time in the 100 Breaststroke set a new Minges pool record besting UMBC’s Emily Escobedo time of 1:02.03 set in 2017.
Freshman Jecza Lopez took first in both the 1-meter (272.10) and 3-meter (279.15) dive and achieved an NCAA Zone score in the 1 meter. In all, ECU swept both boards claiming the top four spots with Lopez, sophomore Caitlin Irvine-Smith, sophomore Averi McQuitty and senior Flannary Patterson.
Freshman Elena Dinehart placed first in the 200-yard Backstroke with a time of 2:03.16, while Wolfe finished second (2:03.41). Sophomore Sara Kalawska won the 100-yard Butterfly with a time of 57.46.

The Pirates will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 14 when they host UNCW at 11 a.m. (ET) in a diving event only inside Minges Natatorium. The full squad will host James Madison on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. (ET).

GREENVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville Women’s Swimming and Diving dropped its dual meet at East Carolina on Saturday (Oct. 7) by a score of 205-95.
“The team’s high energy today was unmatched,” said head coach Elizabeth Lykins. “Our divers had their first chance to compete, and they did a nice job on both boards. We have plenty of things to work through and improve upon, but it’s a long season and this is a strong building block in the process.”
Asheville began the day taking second, fourth, fifth and sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Danai Gkogkosi, Taylor Smith, Chloe McDonald and Abby Parks took second in 1:47.62, while Grace Adams, Beatrice Cocconcelli, Riley Edmundson and Ava Kilpatrick took fourth in 1:48.24. Addison Wright, Miriam Wheatley, Anna Kate Halligan and Rachel Daly took fifth in 1:53.60, while Amelia Presley, Jane Brierley, Alexis Walker and Gracelyn Cox finished sixth in 1:55.03. Asheville took second, fifth and sixth in the 1000-yard freestyle, paced by Caitlin Hefner in 10:37.16. Rose Sciaudone (10:57.39) and Gaby Shenot (11:15.45) finished back-to-back, fifth and sixth in the event respectively. Asheville placed second, fifth, sixth and seventh in the 200-yard freestyle, paced by Anna Marcotti (1:53.44) in second. Kilpatrick (1:55.52), Cocconcelli (1:55.90) and Halligan (1:58.34) finished fifth, sixth and seventh in the event respectively.
The Bulldogs collected four placers in the 100-yard backstroke, paced by Alessia Cunegatti (58.86) in fourth. Gkogkosi (59.48), Adams (59.53) and Daly (1:03.19) took fifth, sixth and eighth respectively in the event. Asheville also had four placers in the 100-yard breastroke, led by Smith (1:06.97) with a second-place finish. Wheatley (1:07.75) took fourth, while Cox (1:09.29) took sixth and Brierley (1:09.58) finished seventh. Asheville posted four placers in the 200-yard butterfly, led by Edmondson getting the win in 2:03.70. Caroline Crouse (2:07.94) took fourth in the event, while McDonald (2:11.27) finished sixth and Julie Lahiff (2:19.02) finished seventh. Abby Parks (24.01) picked up a win in the 50-yard freestyle, while Marcotti finished fifth (24.77), Kilpatrick sixth (24.86) and Olivia Ciancimino (25.04) took eighth.
Parks picked up her second win of the day in the 100-yard freestyle (52.37), while Gkogkosi finished fifth in 53.94, Ciancimino (54.60) finished sixth and Daly took eighth (56.18). Asheville notched three placers in the 200-yard backstroke, with Cunegatti taking third in 2:04.05. Adams placed sixth in 2:09.47, while Tess Peny took seventh in 2:18.68. Asheville took fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke, led by Wheatley (2:25.30) in fourth and Cocconcelli (2:25.71) in fifth. Halligan (2:29.18) took sixth in the event, while Cox (2:29.83) finished eighth.
Asheville posted third, fourth, fifth and seventh-place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle, paced by Hefner in third in 5:12.89. Crouse took fourth in 5:13.02, while Marcotti placed fifth in 5:15.52 and Lahiff took seventh in 5:27.04. Asheville also took three of the top four finishes in the 100-yard butterfly, led by McDonald in second (57.90). Edmundson took third in 58.13, Smith took fourth in 58.35 and Wright finished seventh in 1:03.10. Asheville also took second, third fourth and sixth in the 200-yard IM, paced by Cunegatii in second in 2:07.26 and Cocconcelli in third in 2:08.92. Edmundson (2:09.25) finished fourth in the event, while Halligan (2:12.89) placed sixth. Asheville took second, fourth, sixth and eighth in the 400-yard freestyle relay, paced by Gkogkosi, Kilpatrick, Marcotti and Parks (3:32.59) in second. Hefner, Crouse, Smith and Ciancimino took fourth in 3:36.97, while Scaiudone, Shenot, Wheatley and Adams took sixth in 3:43.41, while Walker, Daly, Lahiff and Presley (3:53.44) finished eighth.
Asheville placed fifth through 10th in the three-meter diving event, paced by Jade Canady (203.48) in fifth. Amelia Ward (199.50) placed sixth, while Haley Fein (190.20) placed seventh. Morgan Coughlen (187.50), Leigha Travis (175.43) and Kindal Culpepper (150.08) rounded out the event for Asheville. The Bulldogs also placed fifth through 10th in the one-meter diving event, paced by Coughlen (192.60) Travis finished sixth with a score of 191.25, while Canady (191.03), Ward (190.58), Fein (183.83) and Culpepper (143.73) rounded out the scores for Asheville.
“I am really proud of this team for getting up and going today,” said Parks. “The team stepped up and swam well, and I am so grateful to have been a part of it! We were all working hard and supporting one another, something setting our team apart from others.”
The Bulldogs (1-1) return home to host Liberty on Oct. 27-28. Diving will take place on Friday (Oct. 27) at the Jewish Community Center, while swimming will take place on Saturday (Oct. 28) at the Justice Center pool.
