SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women’s swimming and diving team was defeated for the second time this season, falling to Drexel 160.5-125.5.
Diving
Freshman Sarah Behrman had an exemplary day for the Pirates against Drexel. The freshman from Kennesaw, Georgia, claimed her first two victories for the Dragons for a short-handed squad. Behrman scored a 217.20 on the 1-meter board and a 197.46 on the 3-meter board. Junior Amy Kugelman finished second to Behrman in both events with scores of 205.68 and 186.75 in the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, respectively.
Swimming
The Pirates’ individual program opened in typical Pirate fashion with a victory in the 1000 Freestyle. Senior Allie Waggoner put up an equivalent time to her result from last night with a time of 10:17.27. Towards the end of the meet, Waggoner would go on to claim second place in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5:03.92. The only person to finish ahead of her was Mandy Zajdzinski, who claimed her sole victory of the day with a time of 5:02.78.
In the 200 Freestyle, Natalie Heim claimed her fourth victory in the event this season with a time of 1:51.93. That time was over a second better than her time in the event from the prior night against Lehigh. Later on in the meet, Heim would also claim victory in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 52.19.
The remaining individual program saw the Pirates fall just short of victory in multiple events, despite strong swims from the Pirates. One of the most notable swims came in the 100 Breaststroke. That event saw sophomore Yosun Hacifazioglu narrowly miss out on a win by 0.11 seconds with a time of 1:08.10.
In the closing 200 Freestyle Relay, the Pirates claimed overall victory to end the meet on a high note. Lea Moeller, Naima Hazell, Mandy Zajdzinski and Natalie Heim combined for a time of 1:36.15.
What’s Next
The Pirates will close out the opening half of the season when they return to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, to compete in the Bucknell Invitational from November 22nd to 24th.
Diving
For the first time this season the Pirates split the wins on the two boards across two divers. Freshman diver Nick Graham earned overall victory in the 1-meter board with a score of 293.18. Alongside Graham, Trevor Post claimed his first overall win of the season in the 3-meter board with a score of 315.30.
Swimming
The meet opened with a tightly-contested 200 Medley Relay that came down to both school’s anchors. At the wall, Toma Adam secured the victory over the Dragons by 0.08 seconds with a time of 1:30.92. Adam claimed victory alongside Chris Jackson, Ben Endersby and Michael Klimaszewski. The lively nature of the relay would set the tone for the ensuing meet
.
BIG EAST Champion Sean Vizzard followed that stellar relay with an overall victory in the 1000 Freestyle with a time of 9:30.47. The race was very tight in the beginning, but Vizzard opened up a sizeable gap to the Dragons’ closest competition. With that time, Vizzard bested his time from the day prior against Lehigh by over 10 seconds. Not long after Vizzard, Clil Halevi would touch the wall second with a time of 9:40.25.
Junior Kevin Cary kept the early meet momentum going for the Pirates, securing overall victory in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:40.12. The race played out similarly to Vizzard’s 1000 Freestyle, but Cary pulled a gap in the second half to a healthy victory. In an intense battle for second place, the Pirates’ Jake Karulf outraced his Drexel opposition to the wall to secure the Pirate 1-2.
The Dragons would not go down quietly though, fighting the Pirates tooth and nail after the first break. Drexel went on to claim overall victory in the next five events, barely beating the Pirates in every instance. The Hall refused to let the Philadelphia-based school claim the lead, claiming the necessary points around the periphery to hold the lead.
The Pirates returned to the victory column in the 200 Backstroke thanks to a stellar swim from Balint Marosi. The freshman was engaged in a tight contest, but opened up a gap in the last 75 yards to extend the Pirates lead.
The 500 Freestyle became a swing event for the Pirates as Drexel swimmers outnumbered them four-to-three. Not to be deterred, Sean Vizzard continued to put his stamp on the meet. The senior closed a two-second gap in the second half of the race to out-touch the Dragons’ lead swimmer by 0.14 seconds with a time of 4:38.71. Just like the 1000 Freestyle, Clil Halevi secured key points for the Pirates with a third place finish and a time of 4:42.08
With everything to play for entering the 400 Freestyle Relay, it was all-or-nothing time for the Pirates. Needing a first and third place to claim the victory, it came down to the final swimmers in the pool for each side. In the end, the Dragons managed to claim victory in the relay, handing the Dragons a 156-143 loss.
