Drexel Men Open Season With Win Over La Salle, Explorer Women Get Past Dragons

PHILADELPHIA – La Salle swim and dive split in their dual meet against Drexel today as the women got their second victory this year (159-137), but the men fell to the Dragons.

The Explorers will return to action next weekend as they compete in the Atlantic 10 Classic at George Mason University.

HOW IT HAPPENED (SWIMMING):

  • The women started the meet strong in the 200-medley relay as Rosalia Marin MartinezCarlota UngoTori Fenn, and Toni Rafferty swam to a first-place finish.
  • Ungo continued to swim at a high level and did so in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke taking first.
  • Andrea Savoca is a force in the breaststroke events, swimming to a top spot in the men’s 100-yard.
  • Rafferty finished first in the women’s 50-yard free for the second meet in a row. She also took the gold spot in the 100-yard free.
  •  In the men’s 100-yard free Zack Miller swam a 46.68, enough to get him first-place.
  • Ungo secured her third victory overall in the women’s 200 breaststroke, just ahead of Gabriela Herbreder.
  • Savoca got his second individual win in the men’s 200 breaststroke.
  • Felicia Rogell took gold in the women’s 200-yard IM, proving to be a huge difference in the end results.
  • Savoca took first in the men’s 200-yard IM for his third win of the day.
  • The relay team of Rafferty, Tori FennLauren Fenn, and Herbreder took the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle relay in a pivotal spot in the meet.

HOW IT HAPPENED (DIVING) –

  • Kelsie Waddington and Payton DeCook took first and second respectively in the women’s one-meter dive.
  • Lucas Dekaney remains undefeated on the season with another top finish in the three-meter.
  • Waddington and DeCook repeated their results in the three-meter dive, taking first and second.
  • Dekaney was able to win yet again in the men’s one-meter, followed by Sam Henninger in second.

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men’s swimming and diving team opened up its season with a win against the La Salle Explorers on the road Saturday, 166-129. The Dragons finished first in 10 of 14 swimming events.

In the 200 free relay, Colton WadeDimi GkelisAndrea Casini and Jakub Kwasny took first with a time of 1:25.00. Kwasny also finished first in the 100 and 200 fly with times of 49.27 and 1:53.72 respectively.

Kaan Akdag also had first-place finishes in the 500 free and 1000 free as the freshman clocked in with times of 4:50.46 and 9:59.81 each. Joining in for the freshman class was Dimi Gkelis who finished first in the 100 and 200 back with times of 50.69 and 1:51.94. Colton Wade also had a memorable Dragon debut as he was able to place first in the 50 free as he crossed the finish with a time of 21.36.

Andrea Casini also had a good start to his junior year as he finished first in the 200 free thanks to a time of 1:43.01. Casini was also a part of the first-place finishing 200 medley relay as he teamed up with Dimi GkelisKacper Karnik and Jakub Kwasny to put up a time of 1:31.93 for the Dragons

Up next, the Dragons will head back to the Daskalakis Athletic Center to take on the Seton Hall Pirates on November 3. The first event is slated for 4 p.m.
