Veteran Aussie racer Tommaso D’Orsogna kept the ball rolling at HBF Stadium tonight, winning the men’s 50m butterfly to add to his 100m free victory from night 1 of Western Australian States. The 27-year-old UWA West Coast Olympian registered a time of 24.53 to notch his quickest effort in the event to date, out-doing his previous personal best of 24.74 from way back in 2012.
Less than half a second behind D’Orsogna was visiting Malaysian competitor Jie Chan, who represented the only other competitor to slide under the 25-second threshold. Chan took silver in 24.99, making the Malayisan National Record of 24.38 from 2009 come in his sights.
Fellow countryman Welson Sim was dominant in the men’s 200m freestyle, taking the event in a time of 1:49.99. Sim is Malaysia’s national record holder with the 1:47.36 he earned at last year’s SEA Games. Yesterday at this meet he finished 2nd in the 100m free and 1st in the 400m free.
30-year-old Holly Barratt also kept the wins coming, doubling up on the 100m backstroke and 50m freestyle tonight. In the former, Barratt produced a solid effort of 1:01.68, while she earned a winning time of 25.30 in the latter. Her Rockingham teammate, 23-year-old Tommy Sucipto, found success in the 100m breaststroke, clocking 1:00.95 to come out victorious.
Yesterday’s 400m IM gold medalist, Blair Evans, raced her way to a winning time of 2:29.28 in the 200m breaststroke this evening.
Finally, 21-year-old Olympic finalist Brianna Throssell neared a personal best in the 100m butterfly tonight. The UWA West Coast swimmer touched in 58.39 for the win, just off her 58.12 produced as her career fastest in Budapest last year.
