A pair of distance events and the 800 free relays kicked off the 2023 Speedo Sectionals meet in Novato, California on Thursday evening.

18-year-old Tenaya Winter kicked off the night with a win in the girls’ 1000 free in 10:08.17. That knocks 12 seconds off her previous best time. Ella Ackerman was 2nd in 10:26.88 and 13-year-old Malia Groen was 3rd in 10:27.35. That time ranks Groen in the top 15 among 13-year-olds nationally this season.

Groen and Winter both train with Quicksilver Swimming.

The boys swam their mile (1650 free) on Thursday, where Quinn Jones of the Sierra Marlins Swim Team won in 15:27.40. That put him 24 seconds ahead of the field in the race. That’s a 12 second drop for Jones, who has not yet announced his college commitment.

Jones’ teammates won the girls’ 800 free relay in 7:23.02, led by a 1:47.78 anchor from Ava Chavez. She was joined by Erica Jaffe (1:51.69), Mary Brooke Chandler (1:53.32), and Amalie Claus-Udarbe (1:52.39).
