Men’s Recap

NEWARK, DE – Collin Pettit (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) won the 1000-yard freestyle and Carter Smith (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) won the 3-meter diving competition to lead West Chester University’s men in the pool against Delaware Saturday in the team’s first meet of the new year.

Fresh off the squad’s annual training trip to Florida, West Chester showed some definite progress Saturday, despite falling short against their Division I opponent.

“It was some of the team’s best and most consistent training of the season,” WCU head coach Steve Mazurek said of the team’s southern trip. “That kind of stuff doesn’t always pay off right away.”

Pettit touched the wall in the 1000 free in 9 minutes, 48.81 seconds, out-swimming his opponent by .09 of a second.

“It was the most-exciting swim of the meet,” Mazurek disclosed. “It was a 40-lap race that came down to the finish. It took everything he had to get in first. He has been training and competing with a lot of heart.”

Senior Logan Brockway (York, Pa./Dallastown) placed second in both the 200 butterfly and the 200 individual medley to help West Chester’s cause.

“All of Brockway’s times were in-season bests,” Mazurek explained. “We asked him to do some things in Florida that he has never done before. His approach to training continues to pay off.”

Smith registered 256.20 points off the 3m board to take the top spot in that competition. Michael Robinson (Chester Springs, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) was third.
