HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women’s swimming and diving team earned its first win of the 2023-24 campaign, downing Bates by a score of 170-67 on Saturday at Karl Michael Pool to kick off a stretch of three consecutive weekends at home for the Big Green.
“It was good to start 2024 with some solid swims,” said head coach Milana Socha. “Lindsey Drumm had an excellent meet, finding that next sprint gear. Vivian’s 200 breast was her best of the season. We had some folks doing new events, or things outside their comfort zones, that really stepped up, like Sophia in the 1000, Julianne in the 500 and Rachel in the 200 breast. Our divers seized the opportunity with Maggie and Chiara both qualifying for NCAA Zones.”
The Big Green went 1-2-3 over Bates in two events: the 400 medley relay and the 50 free. Lucy Benoit, Julianne Jones, Jamieson Legh and Samantha Li led a Dartmouth-dominated relay with a time of 3:52.70. In the 50 free, it was Emma Gao (24.45) led the pack that included Li and Rachel Zhang in second and third, respectively.
Jones, who earned a program record during the Miami Invitational – Dartmouth’s most recent outing prior to Saturday – won the 500 free with a time of 5:12.32.
First-years Carinn Bethea and Jamieson Legh helped the Big Green win the 200 free relay and also picked up victories of their own. Bethea was first in the 200 free (1:52.83) and Legh won the 200 fly (2:03.62). The 200 free relay squad also included McLane Gmelich and Samantha Li.
Other Big Green victories came from Sophia Brown in the 1000 free (10:47.84), Kathy Jia in the 200 IM (2:05.77), Benoit in the 200 back (2:05.19) and Vivian Mudry in the 200 breast (2:21.89).
Maggie Lambdin was the high scorer on both the 1-meter and the 3-meter boards with scores of 285.90 and 313.35, respectively.
“All in all, we showed good signs that we are growing and learning, and have clear direction for what our team needs to focus on as we move into the final phase of our competitive season before championships,” Socha added.
Ivy League competition is hosted at Karl Michael Pool for the first time this season when Penn and Yale visit on Saturday, Jan. 13. The action begins with diving at 10 a.m.
HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth men’s swimming and diving team earned its first win of the 2023-24 season on Saturday, rolling to a 172-64 victory over Division III Bates at Karl Michael Pool. Saturday’s meet marked the first of three straight weekends at home for the Big Green.
“This meet gave folks the opportunity to put some of the things they’ve been working on in practice into competition, so that was good to see,” said head coach Milana Socha said. “It was exciting to see some good battles, highlighted by Isaac racing his brother, who swims for Bates. We got to see some of our distance athletes attack some shorter events and Tim swam the first 200 IM of his college career. I’m also very excited that both Everett and Aryeh hit Zones scores on the 1-meter board today.”
The Big Green won 11 different events, including two by Alexander Ye. The junior was victorious in the 200 free (1:41.38) and the 500 free (4:41.58), and was a member of the first-place 200 free relay team. That group, which also featured Tim Park, Tommy Erwin and Reed Wallace, recorded a time of 1:25.58. Park and Erwin also had wins of their own – Park was first in the 200 IM (1:54.00) and Erwin won the 200 back (1:52.10).
Dartmouth went 1-2-3 over Bates in the 50 free, which was won by Isaac Weigel with a time of 21.55 seconds. The Big Green accomplished the same feat in the 200 free and the 500 free, two of Ye’s victories.
Yan Dvorestskiy won the 1000 free with a time of 9:46.08 and Wallace was second at 9:57.81. Kevin Ren picked up a win in the 200 breast, finishing in 2:12.37. Another Big Green triumph came from Andy Peterson, who claimed the 200 fly (1:51.65).
Everett Tai was a winner on the 3-meter board with a score of 315.30 and Aryeh Lesch had the upper-hand on the 1-meter (330.15), an event that saw both divers qualify for the NCAA Diving Zone Championships.

HANOVER, N.H. — The Bates swimming and diving team took home victories in three events Saturday at Dartmouth, as the Bobcats impressed against an NCAA Division I opponent in a road dual meet.
The Big Green secured the overall win, with the women’s team outscoring the Bobcats 170-67 and the men’s team outscoring Bates 172-64.
Bates Women’s Highlights
- Senior captain Grace Wenger (Hanover, N.H.) won the 100-yard freestyle in 52.89 seconds and took second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.91.
- Junior Stephanie Tropper (Solon, Ohio) placed second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:17.52 and also was the runner-up in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:51.65.
- First-year Sarah Palmer (Brunswick, Maine) finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:23.82
Bates Men’s Highlights
- First-year Tim Johnson (Brewster, Mass.), sophomore Marrich Somridhivej (South Windsor, Conn.), first-year John Weigel (Iowa City, Iowa), and sophomore Max Cory (Dublin, Calif.) won the 400-yard medley relay in 3:24.21.
- Cory won the 100-yard freestyle in 45.89 seconds.
- Johnson finished second in the 200-yard IM in 1:57.12 and also took runner-up in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:52.18. His time in the 200-back is the second-fastest in Bates history.
- Sophomore Kailer Tom (San Francisco, Calif.) placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:12.58.
The Bobcats are back in action next Saturday when they head to Norwich for a tri-meet with the host Cadets and Colby-Sawyer.
