Danish National Champion Kasper Johnsen (2023) Commits to Louisville

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Kasper Johnsen, who hails from Denmark’s second-largest city, Aarhus, has announced his verbal commitment to the University of Louisville’s class of 2027.

“I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at the University of Louisville. I would like to thank my coach, family, friends and teammates, who’ve supported me all the way. GO CARDS!!🇺🇸”

The 18-year-old Johnsen is the reigning Danish national junior record in the 50 back, both in short course meters (23.89) and in long course meters (26.29). He recently won national titles in both the SCM 50 back (24.15) and 100 back (52.77) at the 2021 Danish National Short Course Championships in December. He picked up lifetime bests in both events, and also in the 100 free (48.94) with his runner-up finish.

Johnsen represented Denmark last summer at the LEN European Junior Championships and in early December at the 2021 Nordic Swimming Championships. At the latter, he had three podium finishes: gold in the 50 back (24.76), silver in the 100 back (54.37), and bronze in the 50 free (22.77). At the former, he swam the 50 free, 50 back, and 100 back individually, and led off the Danish 4×100 medley relay that finished seventh in the final.

Best times (converted to SCY):

  • 100 back SCM – 52.52 (47.31)
  • 50 back SCM – 23.89 (21.52)
  • 50 back LCM – 26.29 (23.14)
  • 100 free SCM – 48.94 (44.09)
  • 50 free SCM – 22.77 (20.51)

Johnsen will arrive a year after the graduation of Mitchell Whyte, the leadoff backstroker on Louisville’s ACC-champion (20.79) and NCAA-champion (20.72) 200 medley relay. Most of the rest of backstroke group will turn over between now and the fall of 2023, as well.

Johnsen will join the Cardinals’ class of 2027 with Grant Gooding, Kayden Lancaster, and Aidan Paro.
