On-fire Daniel Wiffen of Ireland produced yet another national record en route to topping the podium at the 2023 Swim Open Stockholm.
The 21-year-old clocked the fastest 800m free of his career, hitting 7:44.45 for gold on the final night of action. In the process, Wiffen beat out Ukrainian ace Mykhailo Romanchuk who settled for silver in a still-quick 7:47.12 while Norwegian Henrik Christiansen rounded out the top 3 in 7:51.43.
For Wiffen, his time tonight crushed his own previous Irish standard of 7:46.32 he set not only at the 2022 World Championships but also in the opening 800m of his other-worldly 1500m free national record earlier at this competition.

Among the all-time performers, Wiffen now ranks 23rd while he becomes the swiftest 800m freestyler on the planet this season.

This 800m free national record tops off an exquisite series of swims for the Loughborough-trained Wiffen. In addition to the 1500m free and 800m free records, Wiffen also set a new Irish standard in the 400m free with a lifetime best of 3:44.35.
Wiffen now ranks #1 in the world in the 1500m free, #1 in the 800m free, and #2 in the 400m free on the season.

Last year he became Ireland’s first-ever European Record holder when he clocked a time of 7:25.96 in the SCM 800 free. He also notched new Irish marks in the SCM 400 and 1500 freestyle events last December.
Even if he doesn’t get gold at Worlds he is looking like a superstar come Paris if he stays on this trajectory how good would that be for Irish swimming

Negative split swimmers fall right into the Bobby Finke trap with his crushing finish. Paltrinieri did it right last summer by creating the gap early.

His last 50 was 25+ last summer and his final time was 7.39
Reckon he wins the 1500 , gets a medal in the 800 and top 6 finish in the 400
Pretty bold statement. The race becomes a lot different when there are 4-5 other guys who have the ability to pop off on any given night. Take a look at Martens last year, had a stellar Stockholm meet, but then didn’t quite hit those same heights when he was at the big meet. Still an exciting trajectory, though.
