RIVERSIDE, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield’s men and women’s swimming and diving teams finished the California Baptist tri-meet with a winning record over CBU and Pomona-Pitzer as the Roadrunners went 2-0 on the afternoon and totalled over 15 first-place tallies and snagged a Western Athletic Conference win over the Lancers.
The men took control the second half of the meet after trailing by one point at the first break. Ryan Brimer, Loren Gillilan, Kris Rogic, Noah Hultner, Richie Campbell and Alex Rodriquez led the men in the pool while Sam Stinson continued to rock on the boards.
Loren Gillilan recorded three first-place finishes while Ryan Brimer had two and Kris Rogic had one.
Stinson finished second in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events with a score of 288.05 and 270.30, respectively.
“We did a different lineup today – switching Kris and Loren in some important events and it paid off for the `Runners,” explained CSUB’s Director of Swimming, Chris Hansen.
The women dominated from the beginning to the end. Mikayla Popham and Autumn D’Arcy lead the day with four wins each. Senior Jayssie Haynes swam outside her comfort zone to help secure the women’s win as Hansen added: “she did it really well.”
Tabea Mose and Maddie Cosgrove also had a big day. Mose led off for CSUB in 200-yard medley relay and helped the group win the event. She also had first-place finishes in the 100- (57.50) and 200-yard (2:08.02) back.
Crosgrove placed first in the 200-yard fly with a time of 2:04.07, fourth in the 100-yard free and started off in the Roadrunners’ 400-yard free relay that posted a first-place time of 3:33.19.
The strong road performance from CSUB sets both teams up with a WAC win early in the 2019-20 season.
CBU Release
RIVERSIDE – Six wins highlighted California Baptist University’s tri-dual with CSU Bakersfield and Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
Three Lancers won multiple events on Saturday. Sean Foster’s led the way with three wins, including two in individual events, while Jacob Leahy and Evan Honer each had two victories.
Foster won both breaststroke events for CBU. He won the 100 breast in 55.83 seconds, which ranks eighth in the Lancers’ all-time top-10. The junior improved on his season-best time in the 200 breast (2:04.15) by almost two-and-a-half seconds, as well.
Leahy and Foster teamed up with Josh Walters and Matthew Niculae for a win in the 200-medley relay. The quartet clocked a new season-high for CBU of 1:30.73. Leahy also won the 100 backstroke in 49.02, which ranks seventh in the Lancers’ record books.
Honer continued a phenomenal start to his collegiate career by sweeping both boards with season-high scores on Saturday. The true freshman won the 3-meter board with 336.90 points and eclipsed 300 hundred points again for the win at 1-meter (309.35). His 1-meter scores ranks fifth in the Lancers’ all-time top-10, while his 3-meter tally ranks sixth.
Both Leahy and Foster were impressive in the 50 free. Leahy took second in 21.14, as he was just out touched by CSU Bakersfield’s Richard Campbell (21.07), while Foster logged a new personal best of 21.23 to take third.
Robert Moseley finished top-three in both backstroke events. He took second in the 200 back (1:52.73) and finished third with a new season-best time of 51.49 in the 100.
The Lancers showed their depth by putting three swimmers in the top-five of the 100 and 200 frees and 100 and 200 butterflies.
Kyle White took second in the 100 free with a personal-best time of 46.04. Walters took third (46.17) and Leahy finished in fourth (46.44).
Walters took second with a new season-best in the 100 fly (40.11), while David Miller (fourth, 50.64) and Adityastha Wratsangka (fifth, 50.96) both had season-highs in the event, as well.
Miller finished runner-up in the 200 fly (1:52.27), while Quinn Birtles (1:53) and Wratsangka (1:53.39) finished in third and fourth.
Niculae (1:43.10), Colton Babcock (1:43.39) and Elijah Devera (1:44.34) finished third through fifth in the 200 free.
Zane Freeman (257.20) and Tyler Stevens (252.55) took third and fourth on 3-meter, respectively. Stevens also took fourth on 1-meter (238.25), while Freeman came in seventh (220.80).
Pomona-Pitzer release
RIVERSIDE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men’s Swim team battled against two talented Division I programs on Saturday afternoon, completing a tri-dual meet against Cal Baptist University and Cal State Bakersfield. Paddy Baylis had a standout performance as the New Zealand-native was the Sagehens’ sole winner with a top finish in the 1000 Yard Freestyle at 9:22.97 and first in the 500 Free at 4:34.84.
In the 1000 Free, Dylan Hou finished at 9:47.14 to take third place. Freshman Anzo DeGuilio impressed in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a second-place finish at 1:42.91 and later took sixth in the 100 Freestyle at 46.99.
Over at the 100 Backstroke, Jason Lu crossed in fourth at 52.64 seconds and fourth in the 200 Back at 1:55.33. Matthew Choi placed in fourth in the 100 Breaststroke at 58.70 and took third in the 200 Breast at 2:07.63. Hou followed behind in fourth in the 200 Breast at 2:08.02. Will Abele crossed in fifth in the 200 Butterfly at 1:54.95 and finished second in the 500 Free at 4:43.29.
In the final event of the day, the 400 Freestyle Relay, the Sagehens’ A team finished in third as Lukas Ming Menkhoff, Tag Curwen, Anzo DeGuilio, and Will Abele combined for a time of 3:07.36.
