ITHACA, N.Y. – The Columbia men’s swimming and diving team (6-2) cruised to a 172-128 victory over the Cornell Big Red (3-5-1) on the road Saturday afternoon.
“It is always a tough meet in Ithaca, and yesterday was no different,” Head Coach Jim Bolster said. “The score is not nearly as indicative as to how close the meet was. Almost every race went down to the last five yards and fortunately we got to the wall first in enough of them to get the win. Cornell is well coached and they always present different obstacles for us with their strategies. Today we were able to hold them off.”
Jonathan Suckow continued his excellence, not only winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter yet again, but setting two new Cornell pool records in the process. The senior notched a score of 465.68 in the 3-meter, and 420.53 in the 1-meter, winning both events rather easily and shattering both of the Big Red pool marks. Nick Leavell also had a great day, placing second in both events with scores of 341.25 and 325.13, respectively.
“Completely dominant performances from Jonathan in both events,” Head Diving Coach Scott Donie said. “All the divers are looking extremely strong as we head into our final dual meet of the season next weekend against Dartmouth.”
In the pool, the Lions dropped the first event of the day but bounced back strong to win the next three events in a row. Adam Wu led the way, winning both the 1000-free (9:30.33) and the 200-free (1:39.42) back-to-back. Stanford Li followed that up with a win in the 100-back (49.65).
Later on, Seungjoon Ahn won the 200-fly (1:48.02) and then Zion James won the 50-free (20.87).
The Lions went on to win the final five individual events of the afternoon, highlighted by victories from Brian Lee in the 100-fly (48.54) and Kyle Won in the 200-back (1:48.90).
Wu made it a perfect three-for-three on the day when he won the 500-free with a time of 4:37.01 to put the finishing touches on the victory.
