GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Day three of four of the 2020 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Swimming & Diving Championships saw numerous records broken as action heated up at the El Pomar Natatorium on the campus of Colorado Mesa.
FINAL RESULTS
500-yard Freesytle
It was a family affair as twins Mia and April Wood of Colorado School of Mines finished first and second. Mia took the lead from the start and never looked back as she finished in 4:54.27 which was just over 11 seconds ahead of second and reclaimed her title.
Colorado Mesa’s Torsten Rau took the crown as he started to take the lead late in the race and touched the timing pad in 4:32.86.
100-yard Backstroke
In the women’s race, Savannah Tice of Western defended her title in an exciting race as she just finished ahead of second place, Sarah Fillerup of Colorado Mesa by .09 seconds. Tice finished the race with a time of 55.57.
Austin Lane from Colorado Mesa took the title as he led from the start and finished with an overall time of 49.65.
100-yard Breaststroke
In a very close race, Dixie State’s Miriam Gonzalez closed hard down the final stretch to outstretch Sam White of Colorado Mesa and Juliana Cifuentes of Oklahoma Baptsit to take the victory. Gonzalez finished in a time of 1:03.66 while White and Cifuentes clocked times of 1:03.76 and 1:03.77 respectively.
In arguably the most exciting race of the meet thus far it was Peyton Scherschel of Colorado School of Mines that just finished ahead of Mahmoud Elgayar of Colorado Mesa by .01 seconds! Scherschel got to the timing pad in 55.21 while Elgayar finished in 55.22.
200-yard Butterfly
Bella Walters from Colorado Mesa took home the individual title after finishing in an overall time of 2:07.12.
Making it back-to-back titles in the event was Colorado Mesa’s Pedro Terres Illescas as he finished over two seconds ahead of second place with a time of 1:48.13.
Women’s 1-Meter diving
Making it a clean sweep of the diving competitions was Brittany Dixon of Colorado Mesa as she totaled 444.20 points. Fellow Maverick teammate Jolynn Harris placed second with a score of 440.65 points.
800-yard Freestyle Relay
In an exciting race that came down to the final stretch it was Mia Wood of Colorado School of Mines that anchored the Orediggers to the victory alongside teammates Olivia Lomax, Madeleine and April Wood. The relay team combined to record a time of 7:33.89.
In the men’s final, Colorado Mesa led from the start as the team of Justin Fell, Torsten Rau, Noah Beaver and Pedro Terres Illescas finished first with an overall time of 6:45.66.
100-yard IM
In the non-scoring exhibition race, Colorado Mesa teammates, Logan Anderson and Olivia De Remer became the first women swimmers to dip under the 1:00 barrier at the RMAC Championships as Anderson took first in 58.92 and De Remer finished in 59.62.
On the men’s side it was Kurt Gscheidle of Oklahoma Christian who re-broke his own record from last year in the prelims and still had enough in the finals to re-break that record once again. Gschedile finished the finals in first with a time of 52.56.
