For the second consecutive night, the UIndy swimming & diving teams faced off against a tough Division I opponent, this time hosting the University of Cincinnati Friday night in the first home meet of 2017-18. One day after racing at IUPUI, the Greyhound men fell to the visiting Bearcats, 188-111, while the UIndy women lost, 215-85.

Despite the final tallies, UIndy Head Coach Jason Hite knows his student-athletes put in a lot of hard work this week.

“I’m really happy with what I’ve seen these past two nights,” said the third-year head man. “We’ve seen some really good early-season racing against some solid DI competition. I thought Athina (Konstantinidi), “Zava”  (Guilherme Zavaneli) and Sotia (Neophytou) stood out tonight, but I’m really proud of our team overall.”

Zavaneli led the Hounds with four event wins – two individual and two relay – and hit a pair of B cuts. He and freshman Victor Antonon went one-two in the 50 free with times of 20.29 and 20.99, respectively. Later, in perhaps the race of the night, Zavaneli out-touched UC record holder Chris Bready by less than two tenths to take the 500 free (4:31.13).

“Zava” also helped the men’s team to victories in both relays. He joined forces with Rodrigo Codo BertiJan Zuchowicz and Ante Lucev to win the 400 medley relay (3:21.99), then bookended the night with Berti, Lucev and Antonon to take the 200 free relay (1:23.01).

Other wins for the men included Berti in both the 100 and 200 back, and Lucev in the 100 fly.

Sophomore Athina Konstantinidi amassed three wins of her own, winning both individual breaststroke races and helping UIndy to the 400 medley relay win. She was joined by Madeleine LegerSotia Neophytou and Malvina Shoukri in the latter event, combining for a time of 3:54.73.

Junior Stefanie Haholiades recorded a B-cut time of 24.05 in her 50-free win, and Neophytou touched first in the 100 butterfly with a 56.60.

Some of the Greyhound divers were also in action Friday. Freshman Cassie Kury was UIndy’s top finisher on both heights on the women’s side, as the Eastpointe, Mich., product finished third on the one-meter and fifth on the three. Jared Hilt finished fourth on the one-meter board for the men.

The Greyhounds head to South Florida next week for their annual training trip, which will be capped by the Nova Southeastern Shark Invite Oct. 13-14.

“We are excited about our upcoming training trip to Florida,” added Hite. “It will be another opportunity to be part of some fast early-season racing.”
