The Basics
– FIU ran away with the FIU Fall Classic by outlasting a charging Buffalo team for the 41-point victory in the first multi-team event of 2017 and the first such classic hosted by the Panthers.
– FIU also took dual wins over North Florida (157-104) and Georgia Southern (145-117). The duals victories push the FIU mark to 3-0 this season.
– In the classic format, teams are limited to nine total swimmers and two divers, with each swimmer allowed to swim no more than two individual events of their three each day. Each event swims an “A” and “B” race, with championship scoring (20 to 12 for “A” and 9 to 2 in the “B” race) for each. There is no qualifying, swimmers are assigned either the “A” or “B” race. The two divers are assigned an “A” or “B” program.
– After winning both relays Friday, including setting a new pool record in the 400 Medley relay, the Panthers took the 200 Medley relay (1:44.34) and finished second in the 400 Free relay (3:28.15) by four one-hundredths of a second to Buffalo, scoring 154 of a possible 160 relay points for the meet.
– In the 1-meter springboard, FIU swept both heats, with senior Rebecca Quesnel (Burlington, Ontario, Canada) winning the “A” diving program with a 289.90 score, while freshman Rachel Foord (Melbourne, Australia) (273.85) took the “B” program.
– FIU winning individual results… Stephanie Hussey (Beaconsfield, Quebec, Canada made it 3-for-3 in individual events over the two days Saturday with two wins – 4:59.95 in the 500 Free, and 2:03.56 in the 200 Fly. The other three individual winners for FIU on the day: Kyna Pereira (Umkomaas, South Africa) – 4:58.62 in 500 Free, Carita Luukkanen (Lambere, Finland) – 2:21.01 in the 200 Breast and Skye Carey (Satellite Beach, Florida / Satellite Beach HS) – 2:01.40 in the 200 Back.
– In Jacksonville, FIU posted the fastest time in one of two relays, the 400 Free, with a 3:36.94 result.
– The Panthers posted the fastest time in eight of the 12 individual events to win both duals. FIU also posted the second-fastest individual time in three of those events and touched first in the first three spots in the 500 Free.
– Berta Triola (Mataro, Spain) touched first in both the 200 (1:55.95) and 500 Free (5:11.41), with teammateAnna Topolanski (Paris, France) taking the 100 (58.79) and 200 Back (2:06.99) and Kelsie Campbell(Nottingham, England) won the 100 Free (53:06) and 200 IM (2:08.50) in the duals.
– Oceane Peretti (Hyeras, France) won the 1000 Free (10:39.60) and Nicole Hunnewell (Miami, Florida / Coral Reef HS) was fastest in the 200 Breast (2:21.88) in Jacksonville.

“This was a great team weekend,” said FIU Head Coach Randy Horner. “We won the Fall Classic and our split-squad brought home two wins on the road. I feel like we have a good idea of where we are and what we need to work on moving forward.”

Next Up
FIU will travel to Dual-A-Palooza at the end of the month to take on Rice, Tulane and Denver in New Orleans. The two-day event begins October 27.
