The 2023 Polish Grand Prix kicked off today from Oświęcim with contestants vying for spots on the nation’s roster for this summer’s World Championships, World University Games and the inaugural LEN U23 competition.

Although no minimum time standards for Fukuoka were notched on day one, several swimmers snagged performances good enough for the other two competitions.

Among them was 18-year-old Krzysztof Chmielewski, who took on 2 events to begin his Grand Prix campaign.

The teen first competed in the 400m IM where he topped the podium in a time of 4:23.93. That fell within striking distance of his best-ever time of 4:21.17 produced at the World Junior Championships where he placed 5th.

The final event of the night also fell victim to Chmielewski as he grabbed gold in the 800m free. He touched the wall in a solid 8:00.85 to dip under the minimum time standard needed for the LEN U23 Championships.

Chmielewski had a breakout 2022 when the Pole earned 200m fly gold and 400m free bronze at the World Junior Championship while also contributing to two relay gold medals. At the European Junior Championships, he also topped the 20mfly podium while snagging silver in the 400m free and 1500m free while bagging bronze in the 800m free.
