The second day of the French Elite SC Championships was highlighted by a new French Record set by Charlotte Bonnet in the women’s 100 breast. Bonnet, who has been swimming breaststroke more and more lately, already won the women’s 50 breast on day one. Last night, she sped to a 1:05.03. Bonnet had initially set the record two weeks ago at the World Cup stop in Berlin, swimming a 1:05.29. Gaining some momentum heading into the World Championships, Bonnet continues to improve in the event.
A reminder that this meet is serving as France’s final selection event for the SC World Championships next month.
In a tight race in the men’s 50 free, Maxime Grousset touched out Florent Manaudou, finishing in 21.03 and 21.15 respectively. They were so-so races for the sprint stars. For context, the duo would have been third and fourth in the 50 free final at the World Cup stop in Indianapolis this week. Notably, Manaudou holds the French Record at 20.26, which was set in 2014.
There was another near-miss on a French Record, with Antoine Viquerat swimming a 2:04.86 to win the men’s 200 breast. That time comes in just off the French Record of 2:04.50, which has stood for 13 years.
Melanie Henique won the women’s 50 fly by a wide margin, swimming a 25.26 to touch first by well over half a second. It was a solid swim for Henique, who holds the French Record in the event at 24.56. Though she was a bit off her personal best, Henique virtually tied with fellow French sprint star Beryl Gastaldello, who swam a 25.18 last night competing at the World Cup in Indianapolis.
In the men’s 100 back, Mewen Tomac sped to victory in 50.06, beating out fellow backstroke star Yohann Ndoye-Brouard, who touched second in 50.54. Tomac was just half a second off the French Record, which stands at 49.57 by Jeremy Stravius from 2013. For Ndoye-Brouard, the swim was a personal best, making him the sixth-fastest French performer all-time in the event. Notably, Stanislas Huille clocked a 50.97 for third place, marking a new personal best. With that swim, Huille is now the seventh-fastest French performer all-time in the event.
Logan Fontaine took the men’s 800 free in another great performance, clocking a 7:35.47. He swam a consistent race, splitting 3:47.18 on the first 400m, then came home in 3:48.29 on the second 400.
