WOMEN
PLEASANT PRAIRIE, Wis. — Carthage captured its third-straight College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) women’s swimming title following Saturday’s finals of the 2020 CCIW Swimming & Diving Championships.
All three titles have come under the direction of head coach Beth DeLaRosby, who won the conference’s Female Coach of the Year honor.
The Lady Reds won with a team score of 772, followed by Wheaton (717.5), Illinois Wesleyan (528), Augustana (509), Carroll (399), Millikin (326.5) and North Central (85).
Illinois Wesleyan sophomore Ellen Gilbert was named the Female Most Valuable Swimmer following wins in the 500-yard freestyle (5:03.42), 100-yard butterfly (55.77) and 200-yard butterfly (2:02.71). Gilbert is Illinois Wesleyan’s first recipient since all-American and national champion Meg Stanley in 2017.
Gilbert set a meet record in the 200-yard butterfly on Saturday as her time of 2:02.71 topped the previous record of 2:02.94 by Illinois Wesleyan’s Katie McHugh in 2013.
Wheaton took home the other two awards as senior Michaela Sandeno was named the Female Outstanding Participant and freshman Abby Pardridge earned Female Rookie of the Meet honors. Pardridge won the 200-yard IM (2:05.20), 200-yard backstroke (2:03.91), and was second in the 100-yard butterfly (57.13). Sandeno placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.73) and third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.28).

MEN
PLEASANT PRAIRIE, Wis. — Carthage won its fourth-straight College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) men’s swimming title following Saturday’s finals of the 2020 CCIW Swimming & Diving Championships.
It was the program’s 10th men’s swimming title in school history and fourth under head coach Seth Weidmann, who was named the CCIW Male Coach of the Year.
The Red Men won with a team score of 871.5, followed by Wheaton (782), Augustana (545), Illinois Wesleyan (368), Millikin (301.5), North Central (136.5) and Carroll (111.5).
Carthage junior Mitchell Mages was named the Male Most Valuable Swimmer following first place finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:00.88), the 100-yard breaststroke (54.39), 400-yard freestyle relay (3:02.23), 800-yard freestyle relay (6:49.80) and 400-yard medley relay (3:21.92).
Mages is the first Carthage student-athlete to win the Male Most Valuable Swimmer award since Kyle Drake in 2012.
Carthage junior David Vowels was named the Male Outstanding Participant as he tied for fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (21.52).
Illinois Wesleyan freshman Dillon Cherwin earned Male Rookie of the Meet honors as he took second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:51.67) and the 400-yard IM (4:04.58), as well as fourth in the 200-yard IM (1:52.95).
In the final event on Saturday, the Carthage team of Mages, Nick Nevins, Nick Seroni and Cooper Hawkins set a meet and CCIW open record in the 400-yard freestyle relay, clocking a time of 3:02.23. This time beat the previous meet record of 3:02.47 set by Wheaton in 2006, and the previous open record of 3:02.61 set by Wheaton in 2018.
