Carrozza, Larson, Adams Add More Wins to Finish Texas Senior Circuit II

Just about all of the Texas postgrads had gone home by the final night of the 2013 Texas Senior Circuit (II) meet in College Station, Texas, but a few of their undergrads, some top juniors, and the home team from Texas A&M, left enough quality to make some worthwhile results Sunday evening. Most of the class remaining at the meet was on the women’s side.

A&M senior-to-be Breeja Larson won the women’s 50 breaststroke in 31.43. Her best time in the race is still a split from the Olympics, but she’s spent a little bit of time this off season focusing on how to really sprint this shorter race. There was no Laura Sogar in this race, after the two had several battles, but versatile sprinter Gretchen Jacques came in 2nd in 32.31.

In the women’s 200 fly, A&M’s Cammile Adams won in her signature event with a 2:13.85. After a short time training at SwimMAC Carolina for the first part of the summer, Adams’ sprint races saw a  big bump, but her distance races haven’t been as good. We’ll find out in three weeks how that plans out for the total season-long plan.

Texas’ Kaitlin Pawlowicz took 2nd in 2:14.73.

In the women’s 100 backstroke, Alex Hooper won in 1:04.41. She was followed by 14-year old Nitro swimmer Regan Barney, who swam a 1:05.49. That is a huge best time and ties her for 6th in the country in the event this year among 13-14’s.

Sarah Henry then won the women’s 800 free in 8:53.82, which continues a kind of ho-hum meet for her. Texas’ Kelsey Leneave was a second behind in 8:54.96.

In the women’s 200 IM, Longhorn Aquatics’ Quinn Carrozza won in 2:17.70. The 15-year old had a great 200 free on Sunday night, and though this 200 IM isn’t her best event, that swim was a lifetime best by over three seconds. She started off the meet a bit slow in the 200 back, but has been on fire since that.

Wrapping up the women’s meet was Texas’ Ellen Lobb, who took the 50 free title in 25.83. That just nipped Mexican Olympian Lili Ibanez, who was 2nd in 25.87. That’s a lifetime best for Lobb, who is now within range of being a surprise finalist, at least, at this month’s World Championship Trials.

Of the top swims on the men’s side, Texas’ John Murray completed a burnt-orange sweep with a 23.68.

15-year old PACK swimmer Ben Walker also had a nice swim with a 2:10.22 to win the men’s 200 IM. That’s the third-best time by a 15-year old nationwide this year.

Well, you all better remember that name. A Nitro kid who moved to PACK last Fall – his family relocated. Great breaststroker,(ranked top 5 last year in 100 and 200) but also with very good other strokes. Great future in breast in IM.

Very happy for Barney, again. When she swims backstroke I make sure our kids watch. I just wish her hand entry is more forceful.

Go Nitro!
