Life just keeps getting better for Australian swimmer Cam McEvoy.
Less than a year after becoming the first Australian to ever win an Olympic gold medal in the 50 freestyle when he did so at the Paris Games, the 30-year-old McEvoy announced on Instagram that he and wife Madeline are expecting their first child.
The couple said they are expecting a baby boy.
“Going through the last few months with Maddi has been a rollercoaster of excitement, uncertainty and awe,” McEvoy said in the Instagram post. “Watching her go through the physical and emotional taxes of pregnancy so far, whilst carrying the added fear of how pregnancy may affect her own health with her heart, has been nothing short of watching the full breadth of the human spirit to fight and give life in action. I’d run through a brick wall for Maddi and my son already.”
McEvoy won the 50 freestyle at the 2023 World Championships, and then followed that up with the victory in Paris thanks to a terrific final 20 meters, as broken down in this article.
He touched the wall in a time of 21.25, just ahead of 29-year-old Benjamin Proud (21.30) of Great Britain and 33-year-old Florent Manaudou (21.56) of France to lead a podium of older swimmers.
McEvoy also represented Australia in the London, Rio and Tokyo Games, but hadn’t won an individual Olympic medal until breaking through in Paris.
At the Rio Olympics, McEvoy was a member of Australia’s 400 free relay and 400 medley relay teams that won bronze medals in each event.
In Tokyo, he won another bronze medal as a member of Australia’s 400 free relay team.
McEvoy married Madeline back in February after getting engaged at the end of 2024.
Madeline is a registered nurse and 2nd year PhD candidate at Griffith University, where she is studying wounds and using machine learning to predict surgical wound complications. McEvoy is known as “the professor” for his academic prowess, graduating with a degree in physics and mathematics from Griffith and with a goal of becoming an astronaut after his swimming career is over.
Both will be great parents!
Congratulations 🎊🎉🎈
