Condor Caeleb Dressel was out like a rocket, turning under world record pace at the 50-meter mark. At the finish, Dressel did break the U.S. Open/American record, however, right behind him was a 2-3 finish by London Roar members Kyle Chalmers and Duncan Scott.
Another great showing for London, which goes 2-3. Dressel has been unstoppable and nearly broke the world record. But Chalmers and Scott are keeping London well in the hunt here, and if they’re swimming well, it’s a good sign for the skins later on. Despite Dressel’s outstanding swim, Cali continues to struggle with depth, taking first and eighth. Energy Standard also can’t quite keep up with London’s early pace, taking just 4th and 8th.
Where can we find the full interview?
“Alright Caeleb, Mitch Larkin got sick and we need you to fill in for the 200 back”
I saw a video of greg troy talking about Caeleb and apparently his backstroke is pretty good, he is just so good at fly, free and breast (in SCY) that it doesn’t get much focus. Would be fun to see a 100 or 200 back from him
It’s not close to Phelps or Lochte good.
Why does everything have to be close to Lochte or Phelps good? Why can’t people just complement the dude?
They can. Can also point out, particularly since Troy trained/trains Lochte and now Dressel, that his back is not as good. The two takes aren’t mutually exclusive, especially in a pro sport comment board. I state a simple fact, and every snowflake takes it as hate.and if you think Dressel is short on compliments (he is short on individual Olympic golds) you haven’t been paying attention to the last 4 plus years of hype.
But he ain’t short on world records tho and he will not be short on individual Olympic golds next summer.
I think he’ll have individual gold, not sure how many, just because of the competition (a sobering fact on how tough it is, Lochte only ever won one individual gold at a single Olympics). Looking at each race:
50 free: He’s the clear favourite, but the favourite last won in 2004.
100 free: Again he’s the favourite, but I’d take the field (primarily Chalmers and Scott, but also guys like Grinev) against him.
100 fly: The only one which looks a banker, but even here he’s got two of the brightest young male talents in swimming (Minakov and Milak) after him.
Others: This close the games, I can’t see him getting ahead of Seto/Kalisz in the 200 IM… Read more »
2 WRs, tied for first on the Gator pro group. How many individual golds in Tokyo? 100 fly is the only one he can bank on. Favorite in the 50 and 100 free, but people within 0.1-0.2 sec. Then. of course, he could fall off a scooter between now and then.
I love how Ol Longhorn thinks it’s fine to antagonize everyone on the board but when anyone DARES to cross him it’s a crime against humanity.
Because people want dressel to be a lochte or a Phelps. That’s why. Not saying that’s fair, just saying that’s why.
Ok, he’s not MA good.
He went 55 unrested LCM at the Atlanta Classic in 2017.
Yeah 55.8. Carson Foster, 15, unrested, and by no means known for his 100 back, beat him at that meet. So what do you think he can do rested? What’s “pretty good” for a pro backstroker? His backstroke sucks on his 200 LCM IM.
Dressel swims fly and free exclusively at his major competitions so I wouldn’t call him a “pro backstroker” like a Murphy or grevers. And yes, lots of people, including Carson Foster (an age group phenom) are faster, which is why “pretty good” is an apt description. If he was one of the best at backstroke a different word/phrase would have been used to describe his ability to swim backstroke
