FINA announced today that Bulgarian swimmer Aleksandar Nikolov has been banned for two years after testing positive for the substance Stanozolol, a Class S.1.1 Exogenous Anabolic Androgenic Steroid at the Bulgarian Short Course Meters National Championships.
His ban is dated effective March 23rd, 2013.
Nikolov is primarily a sprinter, having been 24.47 and 52.08 in the 50 and 100 freestyles in long course, and is also a solid butterflier, with a 56.17 in the 100 fly in long course.
He was Bulgaria’s National Champion in the 100 free, the 50 fly, and the 100 fly, and was 3rd in the 200 free (1:52.44) at the meet where he tested positive.
Stanozolol is a synthetic steroid is the same one that infamously Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson used in the 1980’s, and the one that many high-profile professional baseball players have tested positive for or accused of taking.
The drug helps athletes lose fat while preserving lean body mass (specifically muscle).

This guy actually held only the 50SCM Butterfly National Record, which he set at the meet he was tested positive. He holds no other National Records. The participant in the 2009 WC and record holder in the mentioned events has the same name.
