The 2016 edition of the FINA Women’s Water Polo World League comes to a conclusion this week, with the organisation of the Super Final of the competition in Shanghai, China, from June 7-12.
After the conclusion of the six-round of preliminary games in the Old Continent, Italy, Russia and Spain have qualified for the decisive phase of this year’s World League, while the Intercontinental Tournament – held in Lewisville (USA) from February 16-21, 2016 – selected the remaining teams for the Super Final: Australia,Brazil, Canada and USA. As hosts, China completes the list of the national squads present in Shanghai.
The medallists of the 2015 edition, whose Super Final was also held in the same location, were USA (gold), Australia (silver) and Netherlands (bronze).
The Super Final of this year’s edition is contested less than two months before the start of the Olympic tournament at the 2016 Rio Games, highlighted by the participation of seven of the eight teams that will play in Shanghai: Hungary will be in Brazil, while Canada did not make the Olympic qualification.
Four matches per day will be played at the Oriental Sports Centre, with the gold medal game taking place onSunday June 12 at 19:00 (local time). See schedule here
