- June 3-5, 2022
- LCM (50 meters)
- Madison, WI
Some of the top midwest swimmers competed a few weekends ago at the Nicholas Recreation Center in Madison, Wisconsin.
Highlighting the meet was Beata Nelson. Nelson swam the 100 butterfly going a 58.51 and the 200 IM going a 2:15.70. Her 100 butterfly was not far off of her best time of 58.02 which she swam in May 2021. Her 200 IM best time stands at a 2:11.55 which she swam at Wave II Trials a year ago. This meet was Nelson’s first meet since competing at the 2022 World Championship Trials back in April 2022.
Nelson spent four years at the University of Wisconsin and now continues to train there. She swam at 2022 US World Championship Trials finishing third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.80, about two seconds behind second place finisher Leah Hayes. Nelson also swam the 100 fly there swimming a 58.34 to finish sixth.
Also highlighting the girls side of the meet was Annika Parkhe of Patriot Aquatic Club who swam a time of 59.59 in the 100 butterfly. This was a big best time for Parkhe as her previous best was a 1:00.15 from Speedo Juniors West last summer. This is significant as it is the first time Parkhe has been under the 1:00 mark. That time is also faster than the 2024 US Olympic Trials cut although the qualification period doesn’t start until the end of November. It also places her tied for 28th all time in the 15-16 age group in the event. She also earned best times in the 50 free (27.03), 400 free (4:24.49), and 100 back (1:03.72) at the meet.
14-year-old Cate Pawlaski of Edina Swim Club had a huge swim in the 100 breaststroke as she swam a time of 1:11.70. That was a best time for Pawlaski and also marks a huge progression from last summer. Her best time last summer was a 1:13.18. The time also puts Pawlaski at #61 all time in the 13-14 age group in the event. She also earned best times in the 50 free (28.27), 200 free (2:17.84), 400 free (4:42.30), 100 fly (1:05.82), and 200 IM (2:22.70) at the meet.
Highlighting the men’s side was 15 year old Finnley Conklin of Oregon Community Swim Club who swam a 1:04.26 100 breaststroke. That was a best time for Conklin and was a big jump from last year as his best last summer was a 1:05.72. That time also earned his first Winter US Open cut. It also places him at #92 all time for the 15-16 age group.
12 year old Max Garbacz (Unattached) swam a 33.66 50 breaststroke. That was one of six best times he swam over the weekend.
Ryan Slonac of Waukesha Express Swim Team swam a 58.00 100 backstroke to win the event. That improves his best time of 58.92 which he swam at NCSAs last summer. He also earned best times in the 200 back (2:07.03) and 200 IM (2:10.57) at the meet.
