4:34.23 was his best time at 15.

16 was kind of his breakout year, especially in the IMs. The potential was already clear based on being pretty good in both breaststroke and butterfly, but it started to come together after he turned 16.

Leon Marchand (born in May 2002) swam 4.34.23 in March 2018 when he was still 15, then in July 2018 won the French Age Group Championships (for 16 year-old) in 4.27.49, then he swam some 4’19” in the Spring 2019 (4.19.41 in April 2019) when he was still 16, then 4.16.37 at Junior Worlds 2019 in August 2019 (at 17), then – after the Covid period – 4.09.65 in June 2021 (at 19) and 4.04.28 in June 2022 (at 20). Finally the WR of 4.02.50 at 21.
