American University Women, Howard Men Go Undefeated At VMI Quad Meet

LEXINGTON, Va. – Five wins and 11 second-place finishes highlighted a strong first meet of the calendar year for American University men’s and women’s swimming & diving, as the Eagles competed in a quad meet at VMI against the host Keydets as well as Howard and Saint Francis (women). The Eagles beat all three teams on the women’s side in a strong performance overall.

Notable Women’s Results 

  • Four individual wins came from the women’s side, from four different swimmers.
  • Kate Williams was the first winner for the Eagles, going 10:46.42 for first place in the 1,000 freestyle.
  • Freshman Marin Priddy was a winner in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.72.
  • In the 200 fly, junior Isabel McGovern took first in 2:09.30.
  • Grad student Mimi Watts won the 100 fly in 55.26, with McGovern taking third in that event.
  • The foursome of Priddy, Watts, Piper Crosby and Lian Jeong Engle placed second in the 200 medley relay.
  • At the end of the meet, Watts, Jeong Engle, and Crosby teamed up with Grace Gilbert to take second in the 200 free relay.
  • Jeong Engle added two individual second-place finishes in the 100 free and 200 free. Fiona McMahon and Demetra Bicos were behind her in third and fourth in the 200 free.
  • Peyton Thurman and Maggie Fanning took second and third on the women’s 3-meter for diving, and were third and fourth, respectively, on the 1-meter. Thurman scored 225.30 on the 3-meter.
  • Amaya Tomma placed second in the 200 back in 2:10.79, as did Watts in the 50 free in 23.66.
  • Senior Katie Yoo was a third-place finisher for AU in the 200 breaststroke in 2:28.78.
  • In the team scoring, the Eagles beat VMI 197-76, Saint Francis 152-124, and Howard 151-133.

Men’s Notable Results

  • Freshman Zachary Rothman earned a win for the Eagles in the 1,000 free in 9:59.20, followed closely by sophomore Brent Hinckley who took second in 9:59.82.
  • Colin Clough placed second in the 100 breaststroke in 58.07, as did Luke Martens in the 200 IM with a time of 1:57.93.
  • Senior Aidan Delehanty was third in the 100 back in 53.10, while Hinckley took third in the 500 free in 4:49.22.
  • The Eagles took third in both relays. Delehanty, Clough, Daniel Coughlin and Connor Florence were third in the 200 medley relay, while Clough, Florence, Delehanty and Charlie St. Louis teamed up for a third-place finish in the 200 free relay.
  • Senior Griffin Batt placed third on the 3-meter for diving with a score of 232.45, and was fourth on the 1-meter.
  • As a team, the men lost against both VMI and Howard.

  • The Eagles will return home for their Senior Day meet against Old Dominion at 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24.

LEXINGTON, Va. (January 18, 2025) – Howard University women’s swimming & diving team earned a pair of wins in the quad-meet at VMI.

Despite dropping a close one to crosstown rival American, 133-151, the Bison knocked off VMI, 192-79, and Northeast Conference opponent Saint Francis, 147-127.

Senior Zaylie-Elizabeth Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas), junior Zuilda Nwaeze (Columbia, Md.) and sophomores Jasmine Morgan (Chicago) and Chanice Posada (Houston) opened the afternoon with a victory in the 200 Medley Relay, clocking in at 1:44.41.

Individually, Posada took first in the 100 Back (57.23) while Thompson claimed gold in the 200 IM (2:10.66).

Nwaeze and rookie Gabrielle Vickles (El Dorado, Trinidad & Tobago) placed first (23.36) and third (24.42), respectively, in the 50 Free.

Morgan, Nwaeze, Vickles and second-year Bison Summer McKoy (Pikesville, Md.) closed out the meet victorious in the 200 Free Relay (1:36.30).

Saturday (Feb. 1), HU hosts nearby Catholic for Senior Day. First race is slated for 1 p.m., inside Burr Gym Pool.

LEXINGTON, Va. (January 18, 2025) – Howard University men’s swimming & diving team went unbeaten in a tri-meet at VMI. HU defeated the Keydets, 161-126, and crosstown rival American, 179-98.

Senior Erald Thompson III (Nassau, Bahamas) led the Bison with four first-place finishes. The Bahama native won gold in the 100 Breast (57.28), 200 Breast (2:06.38) and 200 IM (1:55.86).

Thompson, along with graduate Tristan Stevens (Chicago), senior Tai Afrik (Holland, Mich.) and junior Taj Benton (Baltimore), represented Bison Nation in the 200 Medley Relay, winning the race with a 1:31.18 mark.

Individually, Stevens earned victory in the 100 Back (50.27) and 200 Back (1:52.93).

Afrik and third-year Bison Darien Williams (Philadelphia) claimed first (1:43.18) and third (1:44.16), respectively, in the 200 Free.

Benton and sophomore Mason Green (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) took gold and silver, respectively, in the 100 Fly, clocking in at 49.95 and 49.63.

Afrik, Benton, Green and Stevens capped off the afternoon, placing first in the 200 Free Relay at 1:23.53.

On the board, senior Zay Swilley (Bradley, Ill.) finished first in the 1-meter (245.10) and 3-meter (265.80) dives.

Saturday (Feb. 1), HU hosts nearby Catholic for Senior Day. First race is slated for 1 p.m., inside Burr Gym Pool.

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Women’s Swimming & Diving competed in its home finale against a trio on Saturday afternoon at Goodall Pool at VMI Aquatic Center.

The Keydets dropped all three head-to-head matchups against American, Howard, and Saint Francis.

Taking home a pair of diving wins was freshmen Isabelle Haer, posting a season-best score of 244.20 in the three-meter dive before scoring a first-place mark of 240.85 in the one-meter.

Kicking off the day was a record-breaking feat by the 200 medley relay team consisting of Ava PhillipsParker Belle FogleEmerson Cosner, and Mackenzie Byrne who snapped an eight-year Rat record with a time of 1:54.87.

Cosner earned VMI’s first top-five mark of the evening by placing fourth in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:12.75. Byrne followed up with a fifth-place finish in the 50 free with a mark of 25.06 and later scored sixth place in the 100 butterfly at 1:00.33.

The Keydets take a short trip across the street to Washington & Lee for the final dual meet of 2025 on Saturday, January 25. After the battle against the Generals, VMI hits the road to Roanoke, Virginia for the Virginia Tech Invitational February 7-9.

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Men’s Swimming & Diving split its home finale, earning a solid victory over American at Goodall Pool at VMI Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon.

The Keydets took down the Eagles, 180-98, for their fourth win of the season, the most in a season since the 2020-21 campaign. VMI went toe-to-toe with Howard, falling to the Bison, 161-126. Before the tri-meet, the Keydets honored its three seniors: Morgan BurdEthan Griffith, and Craig Swain.

Freshman Jack Mills continued his successful collegiate debut by breaking his own 200 butterfly Rat and team records with a first-place time of 1:51.77, nearly two seconds faster than his previous feat. Mills secured another victory in the 100 freestyle with a blistering time of 46.13 and a third-place time of 50.29 in the 100 butterfly.

Sophomore Matthew Picard also picked up a win, tallying a first-place mark of 21.40 in the 50 freestyle before a third-place finish in the 100 freestyle at 46.82. Freshman Stephen Russell posted a 4:47.59 mark in the 500 freestyle for the Keydets’ fourth individual victory while freshman Caleb Wolf followed right behind in second place at 4:48.06.

Recording a second-place time of 51.80 in the 100 breaststroke was sophomore Sam Castle before securing third place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:57.09. In his final home meet, Griffith picked up second place in the 200 breaststroke at 2:09.88 and third place in the 200 IM at 1:58.21.

On the one-meter boards, Lane Jones tallied second place with a score of 229.10 followed by a Ryder Creal third-place score of 226.55.

The 200 freestyle relay group consisting of Mills, Picard, Castle, and Sam Calder closed out the evening with a second-place mark of 1:24.98.

The Keydets take a short trip across the street to Washington & Lee for the final dual meet of 2025 on Saturday, January 25. VMI seeks its fifth win of 2024-25 which would be the most since the 2018-19 season when the Keydets nabbed six victories.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Francis found itself in the top three in multiple events.

Bridget KurtzweilTaylor WethAnna Bernasconi and Oksana Horova took third in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:48.40.

Amalia Bradburn placed second in the 1000-yard freestyle at 11:03.88. Anna Vicent Serrano joined her in the top three, clocking in at 11:04.85 for third place.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Aurem Pifarre won with a time of 1:56.40. The senior also won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:10.24.

Kurtzweil and Inde Patterson were in the top three in the 100-yard backstroke, placing second and third with respective times of 59.34 and 59.61.

Individually, Horova finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:07.21. She also won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.20.

Sara Turner earned a close second in the 200-yard butterfly, clocking in at 2:09.57 and .27 seconds behind first. She also picked up a second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:10.75.

Kurtzweil also won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:08.84. Maura Rubio also earned third at 2:11.47.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, Kathryn Tanis finished first with a time of 2:28.54.

A Red Flash relay consisting of Bernasconi, Rubio, Reegan Brown and Horova ended the meet with a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:38.79.

Saint Francis will travel to Lock Haven, Pa. for a dual meet on Jan. 24 at 4:30 p.m. against the Bald Eagles.
