While the Aquatics GB Championships and Italian Championships wrapped up this week, the 2025 Australian Open Championships are set to begin on Monday, April 21st, and span through Thursday, April 24th at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre.
Although this is a non-World Championship qualifying competition, the meet represents an important tune-up and training milestone ahead of the all-important Trials on the agenda for June.
The entry list is a veritable ‘who’s who’ of Australian swimming, although not everyone will be joining the party. Notable absences include Olympians Kyle Chalmers, Tommy Neill, Sam Short, Matt Temple and Iona Anderson.
However, we’ll be treated to the likes of Olympians Kaylee McKeown, Cameron McEvoy, Maximillian Giuliani, Zachary Stubblety-Cook and Mollie O’Callaghan, among many other high-profile superstars.
There is a strong foreign contingent headed to Brisbane as well, including Erika Fairweather and Lewis Clareburt of New Zealand, as well as Olympic champion and world record holder Thomas Ceccon of Italy.
We reported how 24-year-old Ceccon is entered in a massive program of 7 events, with the versatile ace having been granted permission from the Italian Swimming Federation to use this competition as a World Championships-qualifying meet.
Swimming Australia CEO Rob Woodhouse said of this week’s competition, “The last time our athletes were at this venue, they were booking their ticket to Paris Olympics and Paralympics … and this is a chance to see our athletes have a vital hit out ahead of this year’s World Championships in Singapore.”
“This is a great opportunity to see our Olympic and Paralympic athletes compete, and to also preview our LA and Brisbane hopefuls. We look forward to seeing our swimming – and sport – fans fill Brisbane Aquatic Centre.”

Kaylee not listed in the finals for tonight’s 200IM :'(
So she did go all out in the heats
Not bad for Heat today let’s see result in the finals tonight
China might pose a bigger challenge to the US in the 4×1 this year
Shanya is not looking good
4×1 in a shambles
the us will likely have 4 52 mid legs (at worst) so australia will need to find some 52 lows out of moc / harris & no worse than 52 highs from wunsch / jansen / perkins
The girls are definitely looking like they’re in trouble but I think saying the US will have 4 x 52 mid “at worst” is overstating it a bit. They’ve never had 4 52 mids in a relay in history.
out of torri / kate / gretch / simone, 4 52 mids seems realistic given where they were last year and where i expect them to be this year (maybe throw in a 52 high to be on the safe side?).
i havent seen anything to indicate any of them have taken a step back this year (pending kate — im not sure where her 100 free is at). if anything i expect 1-2 of them to have faster splits this year given what ive seen so far
Then there’s the new up & comer Rylee Erisman as another backup – Aussies definitely in trouble
Oh of course it’s possible. Never said it wasn’t. But calling that the “worst case scenario” isn’t right. Lots of relays in the last few years have done worse than what was considered the “worst case scenario”.
Walsh and Huske have both had nightmare splits out of nowhere. Can’t 100% guarantee that won’t happen again.
No wunsch or Jansen sucks both of the main youngsters not competing
Wunsch is a serial scratcher but a surprise Jansen isn’t there.
Wunsch sick, Jansen injured
Mollie’s underwaters are so good man
Casual 53.51 for MOC . Where does that sit this year?
Wunsch not in her heat
