Senior Kara Kaulius (McDonald, Pa.) and junior Paloma Marrero (Merida, Spain) each broke a pair of school records on Saturday at Ocasek Natatorium and the Akron women’s swimming and diving team closed out the regular season in style with a pair of wins over Bowling Green and Youngstown State.

The Zips posted a 229-128 win over Youngstown State and a 227-118 victory over Bowling Green.

In fact, Akron won all 20 events during the two-day, double-dual meet.

On senior night, Kaulius set new program records in the 1000 free and the 1650 free. The McDonald, Pa., native captured the 1650 free with a time of 16:41.07 and swam the first 1,000 of that event in a blazing 10:04.00.

Marrero’s records came in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events as she captured the 100 in a time of 1:00.95 and touched the wall in the 200 in 2:10.59.

At the time of writing, the 2:10.59 from Marrero marks the 25th fastest time in the nation this season.

Akron swept the top three spots in the 200 breast as freshman Jackie Pash (Carmel, Ind.) and junior Kristen Vargas (Baltimore, Md.) took second and third. Pash posted a time of 2:17.97, while Vargas touched the wall in 2:19.93.

Pash posted a win in the 400 IM as she cruised home in a time of 4:21.86 and won the race by nearly seven seconds.

The relay team of senior Luka Szynal (Lublin, Poland), freshman Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio), sophomore Victoria Shaffer (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) and senior Laura Savariau (Saint-Hilaire-la-Palud, France) captured the 200 freestyle relay in 1:33.89.

Savariau registered a win in the 200 backstroke with a fleeting time of 1:57.78, just ahead of teammate, sophomore Madison Myers (Akron, Ohio) who finished in 1:59.17.

Myers got the best of Savariau in the 100 backstroke as the Akron native posted a first-place finish with a time of 53.22 and Savariau took second in 55.60.

Sophomore Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario) led a trio of Zips as she won the 100 butterfly in 53.27 and was followed by freshman Jessica Bonezzi (Wooster, Ohio) and senior Alisa Tsypin (Gan Yavne, Israel).

The quartet of Myers, Marrero, Fazekas and sophomore Ragen Engel (Springfield, Ohio) won the 200 medley relay in 1:39.25.

Akron took the top three spots in the 200 freestyle as Engel won the event in 1:49.51, sophomore Emma King(Centerville, Ohio) took second in 1:52.45 and Kaulius placed third with a time of 1:52.81.

Engel, Fazekas and Shaffer posted another 1-2-3 sweep for the Zips in the 100 freestyle as Engel won the event with a time of 49.93.

Freshman Mackenzie Vargas (Roseville, Calif.) notched a win in the 200 butterfly as she touched the wall in 1:59.87.

On the diving boards, senior Paige Kelkenberg (Lockport, N.Y.) took first place with 318.30 points and freshman Kari Djonne (Sandy Hook, Conn.) finished second with 263.60 tally.

Engel, Shaffer, Fazekas and Myers closed the night in style with a win in the 400 freestyle relay as they touched the wall in a time of 3:21.37.

Waggoner, freshman Ellie Nebraska (Columbus, Ohio), junior Susan Franz (Canton, Ohio) and Marrero took second in the 400 free relay in 3:25.48.

Up next for the Zips is the 2017 MAC Championships that will be held on the campus of Miami (Ohio) from Feb. 22-25.
