AKRON, Ohio – Akron women’s swimming and diving defended its home pool and captured the crown after two days of competition at the second annual Akron Zips Classic at Ocasek Natatorium, Oct. 18-19.

At the conclusion of the two day meet, the Zips won the women’s field with a total of 843 points, followed by Miami in second with 655 points and Xavier totaled 217.5 points to take third.

On the men’s side of competition, Miami won overall with 712 points followed by Denison (482.5) and Xavier (391.5).

The morning began with the 200 freestyle relay. The Zips claimed their third relay crown in a time of 1:31.07. Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) led off with a time of 23.06 followed by Sofia Henell (Linkoping, Sweden) (22.76), Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) (22.69), and Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio) (22.56).

Olivia Gardner (Bromsgrove, England) was the top finisher for the Zips in the 400 individual medley (4:19.83). Gardner’s time is among the top 20 in the NCAA to date. Nogaj, in her second race of the day, finished in third with a time of 4:20.79.

Nogaj followed that up with a stellar performance, touching the wall with an outstanding time of 53.06, which currently ranks as a top-10 NCAA time. Close behind was Watson, who finished at 54.00 seconds flat.

In the 100 breaststroke, Paula Garcia (Madrid, Spain) was able to touch the wall first with a time of (1:02.34). Close behind was teammate Andrea Fischer (Oak Grove, Minn.) who placed third with a time of (1:03.03).

In the final event of the morning session, Weronika Gorecka (Wroclaw, Poland) was able to take the crown in the 100 backstroke, finishing .01 faster than the next swimmer, finishing with a time of 54.64.

The third and final session of the meet started with a 1-2 punch from the Zips.

The 200 medley relays for Akron went 1-2, finishing with in .01 of each other, 1:40.88 and 1:40.89 respectively.  The Zips winning relay comprised of Gorecka (26.42), Fischer (28.06), Nogaj (23.96) and Waggoner (22.44).  The second-place relay was comprised of Lauren Cooper (Dublin, Ohio) (26.00), Garcia (28.69), Watson (24.03), Henell (22.17).

In the 1650 Free, Brooke Lamoureux (Victoria, Canada) turned in a top time of 16:45.46, good enough for a first-place finish. Not far behind teammate Andrea Galisteo (Madrid, Spain) (16:53.10). Lamoureux and Galisteo’s times are currently the second and fourth fastest times in the NCAA this season, respectively.

Gardner and Gorecka kept the 1-2 streak going in the 200 backstroke, as Gardner finished in a time 1:58.90 (30thin the NCAA) and Gorecka close behind at 1:59.86.

In the 100 Free, the Zips took second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth. The top two finishers for Akron were Henell (49.91, 28thin NCAA) and Waggoner (50.04, 30thin NCAA).

Fischer took gold in the 200 breast (2:14.41) and Garcia finished third with 2:15.50. Fischer and Garcia’s respective times currently rank 24thand 33rdin the NCAA.

Nogaj continued her winning ways, busting out a 1:57.55 in the 200 butterfly, good enough for the fourth best time in the nation.  Jessica Bonezzi (Wooster, Ohio) and Mackenzie Vargas (Roseville, Calif) backed her up, finishing second and third with times of 1:59.48 and 2:00.17, respectively. Bonezzi’s time currently ranks 16thwhile Vargas’ time ranks 26th. This trio also finished 1-2-3 at the 2019 Mid-American Conference Championships last season

The Zips were able to close off the competition on a high note, as the relay team of Nogaj (49.76), Watson (50.18), Waggoner (50.15), Henell (49.68) threw down a 3:19.77 in the 400 freestyle relay. That time ranks third in the country to date.

AKRON, Ohio – The Miami University swimming and diving team wrapped up competition at the Zip Classic on Saturday. The Miami men won with 1142.5 points and the women finished second among women’s teams with 1053 points. The RedHawks broke 13 meet records during the Zip Classic.

The Miami men started the day with a meet record in the 200 free relay (1:21.58), swam by Ben Chatwin, Cole Grosshans, Nic Wamsley and Nick Ward. The 200 medley relay squad of Grosshans, Noah Barr, Jacob Peloquin and Wamsley set a meet record as well (1:30.07).

Hannah Fuchs set a new meet record in the 400 IM (4:19.32). Camila Lins de Mello broke the meet record in the 200 free (1:47.98) on the women’s side while Gordon Wheeler broke it for the men (1:38.83). In the 100 breast, Barr broke the meet record (55.48).

In the 100 free, the meet record was broken on the women’s side by Lins de Mello (49.59) and the men’s side by Wamsley (45.04).

The Miami men took the top three spots in the 100 fly with Spencer Klinsky leading the way (49.49), followed by Wamsley (49.57) and Peloquin (50.33). On the women’s side, Kayleigh Cannon finished third (55.42).

The men again took the top three spots in the 200 fly with Wheeler leading the way with the meet record (1:48.69). Ryan Sego finished second (1:49.56) and Klinsky third (1:49.64). Ashley Underhill was fourth (2:03.27) on the women’s side.

In the 400 free relay, Wamsley, Ward, Grant Cicci and Chatwin set the meet record (3:00.87). Herb, Anna Justinak, Underhill and Lins de Mello were the runner ups on the women’s side (3:24.19).

In the 1650 free, Brandon Crist (15:47.86) won for the men while Emma Bradley finished third (16:58.71) for the women.

Underhill (1:49.86), Claire Doerr (1:51.65) and Molly Zilch (1:51.73) took second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 200 free behind Lins de Mello.

Fuchs (2:15.09) and Barr (2:00.93) each touched the wall second in the 200 breast.

In the 200 free relay, Anna Justinak, Lins de Mello, Izzy Herb and Caroline Ehlers finished second (1:33.57).

James McGuire was the runner up in the 400 IM (4:02.59) for the men.

In the 100 breast, Sam Sutton took second place (1:02.90) while Michaela Mitchell was the runner up in the 100 back (55.65). Grosshans finished second in the 100 back (50.19) for the men.

Mitchell, Fuchs, Madison Hoehn and Underhill finished third in the 200 medley relay (1:43.68). Fitz Miller, Blake Brockman, Klinsky and Chatwin comprised the runner up team (1:32.04), only second to the record-breaking squad.

In the 200 back, Lins de Mello finished third (2:00.54) and Miller finished fifth (1:53.28).

The Miami women travel to Ypsilanti, Michigan to take on Eastern Michigan next Saturday at 2 p.m.

AKRON, Ohio – Xavier swimming closed out the two-day Akron Zips Classic with a pair of third place team finishes. Xavier’s women topped Denison and Cleveland State, while the men topped the Vikings, picking up four top-three finishes, with Jon Bernard picking up three, including a win in the 200 IM.

  • Xavier put a pair of teams in the top 10 of the first race, led by Emily Conners, Clare Bosse, Emily Saugstad and Abigail Garner in seventh place.
  • Emma Kauffeld led the Musketeers in the 500 free with a time of 5:15.14.
  • Alison Herman led Xavier with a time of 2:08.55 in the 200 IM.
  • Emily Conners‘ time of 23.74 led the Musketeers in the 50 free.
  • Emily Conners, Clare Bosse, Emily Saugstad and Abigail Garner led Xavier in the 800 free with a seventh place finish.
  • Xavier’s women had 110 points at end of the first session.
  • Emily Conners, Clare Bosse, Emily Saugstad and Maureen Cummins led off the morning session with a fourth place finish in the 200 free relay, one of two Xavier squads in the top 10.
  • Alison Herman led Xavier in the 400 IM, finishing eighth with a time of 4:34.32. Delaney Sprague also scored.
  • Taylor Hogan tied for 12th in the 100 fly with a time of 57.76. Lorelei Gaertner also scored for Xavier.
  • Emily Conners touched the wall in 1:54.93 in the 200 free to place 12th. Clare Bosse touched just behind her in 13th.
  • Lydia Schaeffer scored for the Musketeers in the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.59.
  • Brooke Atkins‘ time of 57.44 led Xavier in the 100 back. Taylor Hogan also finished top-10.
  • Xavier’s women stood in third place at the end of the second session with a score of 217.5.
  • Brooke Atkins, Lydia Schaeffer, Taylor Hogan and Emily Conners led off the final session with an eighth-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Ali Fort, Kelly Harris, Lorelei Gaertner and Clare Bosse touched just behind in ninth place.
  • Emma Kauffeld placed seventh in the mile with a time of 17:59.79.
  • Taylor Hogan led five Musketeers that scored in the 200 back with a time of 2:06.23.
  • Emily Conners finished 10th in the 100 free with a time of 52.48.
  • Alison Herman led Xavier in the 200 breast with a time of 2:23.74. Lydia Schaeffer also scored.
  • Taylor Hogan placed eighth in the 200 fly with a time of 2:05.35. Sophia Romero also scored for Xavier.
  • Emily Conners, Clare Bosse, Erin Merke and Maureen Cummins closed out the meet with a time of 3:34.44 in the 400 free relay.
  • Xavier finished a score of 368, trailing Akron and Miami (Ohio), but topping Denison and Cleveland State.

Men

  • Christian Thomas, Jon Bernard, Brandon Abboud and Ben Quon led three relay teams in the top-10 of the 400 medley relay, taking seventh.
  • Andrew Martin led four Musketeers in the top-10 of the 500 free, placing sixth with a time of 4:38.95. Will Serad, Ben Quon and Brett Wilson placed eighth, ninth and tenth respectively.
  • Jon Bernard used a time of 1:53.23 to win the 200 IM.
  • Christian Thomas led the Musketeers in the 50 free with a time of 21.36.
  • Xavier’s men’ placed three squads in the top 10 of 800 free to close out the first evening, led by Andrew Martin, Jared Ritz, Ben Quon and Jon Bernard‘s fourth-place finish.
  • Xavier finished the first night with 180 points, trailing Cleveland State by just eight.
  • Alex Sironen, Brandon Abboud, Jared Ritz and Christian Thomas led off the morning session for the men with a fourth place finish in the 200 free relay, one of two Xavier squads in the top 10.
  • Jon Bernard picked up another top-three finish in the 400 IM, placing third with a time of 4:04.06. Will Serad also finished in the top 10.
  • Ben Quon‘s third place finish in the 200 free led a trio of Musketeers in the top 10. Andrew Martin placed fifth and Jared Ritz finished seventh.
  • Jon Bernard again led the Musketeers in the 100 breast, placing sixth with a time of 58.12. Bernard led six Musketeers that scored in the event, including top 10 finishes for Roark Lundal and Will Serad.
  • Alex Sironen‘s time of 51.42 led Xavier in the 100 back, placing fifth. Christian Thomas also finished in the top 10.
  • Xavier finished the second session in third place, moving past Cleveland State with 391.5 total points.
  • Alex Sironen, Jon Bernard, Brandon Abboud and Christian Thomas led Xavier in the 200 medley relay with a fourth place finish, one of two Musketeer squads in the top 10.
  • Andrew Martin led Xavier with a fifth place finish in the mile. Will Serad, Brett Wilson, Cothalee Watko and Nick Mahoney also finished top 10.
  • Jon Bernard picked up another top-three finish in the 200 back, placing third. Alex Sironen also finished top 10, tying for eighth.
  • Christian Thomas‘ time of 46.86 led Xavier in the 100 free, placing eighth.
  • Roark Lundal led five Musketeers that score in the 200 breast, finishing seventh. Davis Klein also finished in the top 10.
  • Brandon Abboud placed sixth in the 200 fly to lead Xavier.
  • Jared Ritz, Ethan Wing, Christian Thomas and Brandon Abboud closed out the meet with a fourth-place finish in the 400 free relay.
  • Xavier finished in third place with a score of 663, trailing Miami (Ohio) and Denison, but topping Cleveland State.

AKRON, Ohio- The first event of the 2019-20 season is in the books and Denison women’s swimming posted a fourth-place finish at the five-team Akron Zips Classic.  Denison totaled 347.5 points across the two-day event.  Akron took home the title with 1,332 points.  Miami was second with 1,053 and Xavier was third, besting Denison by only 21 points.  Cleveland State took fifth with 253 points.

Denison competed in six events in the morning session as senior KT Kustritz led the way with a fourth-place finish and an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 1:03.94 in the 100 breaststroke.  Kate Mesaros finished 15th in the 100 breast in 1:06.25 and Michaela Morrison was 17th after a time of 1:07.75.

First-year Savy Sargent led a foursome of Big Red swimmers that finished in places 10-13 in the 400 IM.  Sargent posted a time of 4:38.35 to finish 10th.  Natalie Zaravella was 11th in 4:38.93 while Erica Hsu (4:39.64) and Grace Kacmarek (4:41.13) followed in 12th and 13th place, respectively.

Zoe Whelan tied for 12th in the 100 fly with a time of 57.76 and Casey Kirby finished 15th in the 100 back in 59.58.

The only relay of the morning session was the 200 free relay where the team of Gabriella Nutter, Maddie Hopkins, Kirby, and Kustritz placed fifth in 1:37.22.

In the evening session, six DU swimmers finished in the top-14 in the 1,650 freestyle led by Kacmarek’s eighth-place time of 18:09.37.  Zaravella was ninth in 18:14.11 followed by Keely Tierney (18:19.06), Hannah Rusinko (18:23.14), and Caroline Colville (18:28.35) in places 10-12.  Megan Balbo touched in 14th at 18:36.90.

Kirby logged a 13th place time of 2:08.15 in the 200 back and Zoe Whelan led a group of four DU scorers in the 200 fly with a ninth-place time of 2:06.29.  Mesaros (2:23.90) got the best of Kustritz (2:25.01) in the 200 breast.

Denison placed seventh in the 200 medley relay as Kirby, Kustritz, Hopkins, and Nutter finished at 1:46.99.  The foursome of Morrison, Hopkins, Kirby, and Kustritz returned for an eighth-place finish in the 400 free relay in 3:34.96 to close out the two-day competition.

There were no diving events held at this competition.

Denison will travel to the University of Cincinnati next Saturday for a dual meet against the Bearcats slated for a 1 p.m. start.
