He improved 1/10 in the 50 free and was 2.4 seconds fast than he’d been a year ago.

Wen Zhang, 15, Dothan Dolphins Swim Team: 100y free (46.06) – Zhang went his second-best lifetime 100 free, only off his best time by .23 and 9/10 faster than at this time last year, at the War Eagle Invitational. He won the boys’ 15-and-over 100 free by 6/100 over a stacked field that included Auburn University swimmers.

She placed second in the 200 IM, anchored the 200 free relay, and led off the 400 free relay, contributing greatly to Riverside’s state title.

Leo Wang, 17, Potomac Marlins: 100y breast (57.38) – Wang won the boys 13-and-over 100 breast at the October Open hosted by the Potomac Marlins at Freedom Center. Wang dropped a half-second and procured his first Winter Juniors cut in the event.

Reminder: The Weekly Wonders column is a celebration of age-group swimming, where new champions are made every day. Anyone can look up the top swims of the week. That’s not what we’re doing here. If we were only reporting on the week’s top swims we would feature the same handful of athletes every Wednesday. Instead, this is an opportunity to introduce the swimming community to athletes who have made great strides in the context of their own particular swimming worlds. By association, it also celebrates their coaches and their teams. The Weekly Wonders column, therefore, amounts to a pat on the back for a job well done, and hopefully encourages swimmers of all levels to continue to reach from within to get to that next level.
