Here are our Weekly Wonders for January 22-24, 2016:
Christopher Erickson, 13, Aberdeen Swim Club: 100y free (51.36) – Erickson won the boys 13-14 100 free, 100 breast, 200 fly, and 200 IM at the Aberdeen Winter High Point Swim Meet. He went best times in the 100/200 free and 200 fly.
Mikey Calvillo, 15, Alamo Area Aquatic Association: 200y free (1:43.77) – Swimming for Sandra Day O’Connor High School at the Texas UIL District 27-6A Championships, Calvillo whacked 2.6 seconds off his personal best to with the 200 free by several body lengths. He also won the 500 free and was on O’Connor’s 200 medley and 400 free relays.
Kaitlyn Sims, 15, Magnolia Aquatic Club: 500y free (4:51.76) – A freshman at Montgomery High School, Sims broke the District and pool records when she won the 500 free at the Texas UIL District 15-6A Championships. Sims also won the 200 IM (2:08.86). Sims also led off the Montgomery 400 free relay and swam breast on the medley relay.
Matthew Chung, 12, Santa Clara Swim Club: 1000y free (10:14.72) – Chung dropped 11.4 seconds in his 1000 and over 90 seconds in his 1650 at the Santa Clara Senior Open. He finished 11th overall in the men’s open 1000 and eighth in the mile. Chung also earned PBs in the 100/200 breast events.
Seamus Trzewik-Quinn, 16, Hawks Swimming Association: 200y back (1:50.33) – Trzewik-Quinn nabbed his first Winter Juniors cut winning the boys’ senior 200 back at the Hawks Trials And Finals meet at the Valley Central High School Natatorium. It was his best time by 1.8 seconds. Trzewik-Quinn also scored a PB in the 50 free, improving his time by 3/10 to tie for first place in 22.52.
Kayla Gerhart, 17, Lubbock Swim Club: 100y breast (1:06.07) – Swimming for Lubbock, Texas’ Coronado High School at the UIL District 2-6A Championships, Gerhart won the 200 IM and 100 breast and contributed to Coronado’s two freestyle relays. The breast was a personal best by 3/10.
Vivian Mudry, 12, Soundview YMCA Stingrays: 200y breast (2:26.48) – Mudry dropped 9.2 seconds to finish second in prelims of the girls’ open 200 breast at Hawks Trials And Finals. The weekend produced two more personal bests for Mudry: 50 free and 100 breast.
Alex Aung, 15, Redding Swim Team: 100y fly (57.36) – Swimming at the Santa Clara Senior Open, Aung had a breakthrough swim in the 100 fly, dropping 1.1 seconds to win the event by .13. He also dropped over 45 seconds in the 100 free and a half-second in the 200 IM.
