Thomas Roark, 15, Boise YMCA Swim Team: 200y free (1:39.53) – Swimming in his first Winter Juniors based on qualifying times earned in long-course season, Rouke went best times in the 50/100/200y freestyles and made national time standards in each of the events. His 200 free was particularly noteworthy: Roark dropped 4.4 seconds from his previous best and was 7.6 seconds faster than he’d been a year ago. He also went PBs in the 50/100m free at the Winter Juniors West LCM time trials.
Haley Yelle, 16, Mansfield Aquatic Club: 1650y free (16:18.27) – A 19.7-second drop in the mile put Yelle on the medal stand at Winter Juniors West. In addition to her third-place finish in the 1650, Yelle picked up a fifth in the 200y free and a fourth in the 500y free. Her 500 was a PB by 3.3 seconds, while her 200 was less than a half-second off her lifetime best.
Phoebe Bacon, 13, Nation’s Capital Swim Club: 100y back (54.35) – Bacon dropped 2.3 seconds from her seed time, but was fully 5.5 seconds faster than a year ago, when she won the girls’ 13-14 100 back at the NCAP Invitational at University of Maryland. Bacon also finished second in the 200 back, fourth in the 100 fly, sixth in the 50 free, 11th in the 200 IM, and 15th in the 100 breast.
Mason Young, 13, Arena Club Aquatics: 100y back (53.24) – Young dropped .3 in prelims and 1.2 more in finals to win the boys 13-14 back by over a second at the RMSC Holiday Invitational. Last year at the same meet he had come in with a seed time of 1:00.4 and finished with a 57.6, making for more than a 7-second improvement in a little over a year. Young was also 2nd in the 200 back and 6th in the 200 IM.
Jason Hamilton, 15, Carter Center Aquatics: 100y breast (57.69) – Hamilton took a half-second off his seed time in prelims and another 1.5 in finals to earn his first national cut with a fourth-place finish in the 100 breast at NBAC’s 42nd Annual Christmas Invitational. He also earned new PBs in the 100/500 free, 200 breast, and 100 fly.
Tavis Siebert, 13, NYS Aquatics: 100y fly (53.59) – Siebert placed second in the boys’ 13-14 100 fly at the NSSC MIT December Invite, with a personal best that was 4.5 seconds faster than at the same time a year ago. Siebert finished the weekend with new times in the 50/100/200/500 free, 100/200 back, 100/200 fly, and 200/400 IM.
Shelby Raber, 14, Tide Swimming: 200y fly (1:59.63) – Swimming at the TAC Titans TYR Blizzard Blitz Meet, Raber dropped nearly 7 seconds in prelims and nabbed her first national cut in the 200 fly with a sub-2:00 scorcher, 1:59.63. She also went best times in the 200 free, 100/200 back, 100 fly (her first junior national cut), and 200/400 IM.
Miku Takabayashi, 15, Blue Devil Aquatics: 200y IM (2:03.77) – Takabayashi won the women’s 200 free, 100 breast, 200 IM and 400 IM at the BASA Bowdoin Open. She went her best time by nearly 2 seconds in the 200 IM and secured her first junior national cut in the SCY event. She also finished the weekend with PBs in the 50/100/200 free and 100 breast.
Carson Foster, 14, Mason Manta Rays: 400y IM (4:00.94) – Foster lopped almost 7 seconds off his seed time, and was 16 seconds faster than he had been a year ago when he won the boys’ 13-14 400 IM with a new meet record at the MAKO Holiday Spirit Invitational. Foster also won the 500 free, 100/200 back, 200 breast, 100/200 fly, and 200 IM. He went best times in each event and set meet records in everything but the 500 free and 200 back. He also got a new PB in the 50 free leading off Mason Manta Rays’ 200 free relay, and picked up his first-ever junior nationals cut in the 200 breast.

Not sure how welcome these may be but here are some quite interesting age-group performances from the recently concluded Queensland State Titles (LCM) in Australia.
2015 World Junior gold medallist, Minna Atherton, followed up her 59.69 (3rd) in the Open W100back with a 59.37 in winning the 15 years 100back setting a new national age record and placing her 7th in the 2015 world rankings.
Racing up an age group in 16 years category, World Juniors bronze medalist Gemma Cooney swam a 59.58 for the 100fly.
Buried a little further down the lists was Japan’s Kosei Kato who swam a 4.10.in the male 12 years 400free.
One correction, Bobo:45.46 in the 100 fly for Hoffer.
Big weekend for US age group swimmers.
