FAIRBANKS, Alaska – San Diego State kept its dual-meet winning streak intact Friday with a 125-75 triumph over the University of Alaska Fairbanks at Patty Center Pool.
The Aztecs won all 11 swimming events and posted the two fastest times in seven of those races, improving to 4-0 on the year to go with an unblemished 5-0 all-time mark against the Nanooks. With the decision, SDSU has won 69 consecutive dual meets since Jan. 8, 2018, a span of over six years.
Reka Nyiradi and Mai McKenna were double winners in individual events on Friday, while Summer West, Kaydence Bispo, Christiana Williams and Eva Allan also emerged victorious for the Scarlet and Black.
In addition, the Aztecs logged a pair of wins in relay competition, including the triumphant 400 medley relay team of Liv Peebles, Moa Bergdahl, Nyiradi and Bispo, who established the tenor for the rest of the night with a winning effort of 3:48.33 to open the meet.
SDSU’s “B” entry also logged the second-best time in the event, as the foursome of Abby Storm, Williams, Alli Mann and Allan clocked at 3:50.24, with the result scored as an exhibition.
West took center stage in the 1,000 freestyle shortly thereafter with a victorious swim of 10:44.03, while Elsa Fullerton soon touched the wall at 10:54.83, although her time was considered an exhibition.
Moments later, Bispo came through with a winning performance of 1:54.95 in the 200 free, edging Bergdahl, who completed the race at 1:55.20, while Storm took fourth at 2:00.79, with the latter two results deemed exhibitions.
Nyiradi added to the Aztecs’ growing point-total in the 50 free with a triumphant sprint of 24.69, while Allan placed third at 25.05.
Likewise, McKenna followed with a victory in the 200 individual medley, where she touched the wall at 2:06.58, besting teammate Grace Mering, who clocked in at 2:10.25.
Alex Downing kept the momentum rolling for SDSU in the 100 butterfly with a winning time of 59.45, while West finished third at 1:02.91, although her swim was scored as an exhibition as well.
As the evening unfolded, Nyiradi logged her second victory in the 100 free with a sprint of 52.46, topping Bispo, who completed the race at 53.30.
Almost on cue, McKenna accomplished the identical feat moments later with her second win in the 100 backstroke, where she touched the wall at 57.93, while Charlotte Sevin clocked in at 59.47 to place third.
The Aztecs quickly grabbed the top two spots in the 500 free, where Allan (5:08.68) and Mann (5:09.30) went down to the wire in a thrilling finish.
Similarly, Williams (1:03.90) and Elisa Branca (1:05.69) were the standard bearers in the 100 breaststroke, while Mering took fourth (1:09.45), with her result scored as an exhibition.
SDSU completed the sweep of events in the 400 freestyle relay, where the team of Mann, Bispo, Nyiradi and Bergdahl joined forces for a winning performance of 3:30.04, while the Aztecs’ “B” entry consisting of Storm, McKenna, Sevin and Peebles logged the third-fastest time in the race at 3:39.74, though their clocking was deemed an exhibition.
San Diego State wraps up its excursion to the Last Frontier on Saturday, when it locks horns with the same Alaska Fairbanks squad in another dual meet, starting at 10 a.m. AT (11 a.m. PT).
FAIRBANKS, Alaska – San Diego State swimmers wrapped up their weekend excursion to the 49th State with another convincing performance on Saturday, posting a 121-78 over the University of Alaska Fairbanks in the second straight dual meet between the two schools at Patty Center Pool.
For the second day in a row, the Aztecs swept all 11 races and logged the two fastest times in 10 of those events to raise their record to 5-0 this season and improve to 6-0 all-time vs. the Nanooks.
“Our girls did an amazing job this weekend,” said SDSU associate head coach Joe Spahn. “This trip was a great opportunity to compete in an unfamiliar environment. We’re especially thankful for the Nanooks’ incredible hospitality.”
Reka Nyiradi was a double winner on Saturday, setting a pool record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:00.83, after recording a winning effort of 10:27.80 in the 1,000 freestyle. Not to be outdone, Mai McKenna established a pool standard as well in the 400 individual medley with a victorious clocking of 4:28.96.
In addition, Eva Allan, Kaydence Bispo, Charlotte Sevin, Alli Mann, Summer West and Christiana Williams also captured event titles, helping the Aztecs notch their 70th consecutive dual-meet victory dating back to Jan. 8, 2018.
Allan claimed top honors in the 200 freestyle after touching the wall at 1:56.31, besting teammate Elisa Branca, whose second-place swim of 1:59.14 was scored as an exhibition.
Likewise, Bispo took home the prize in the 50 freestyle with a sprint of 23.97, edging Moa Bergdahl, who placed second at 24.98, with her result deemed an exhibition.
Along with McKenna’s triumph in the 400 IM, Grace Mering followed in the second spot after completing the distance in 4:38.56, while West followed in the third spot with a time of 4:39.81, with her swim considered an exhibition.
Shortly thereafter, Sevin emerged victorious in the 200 butterfly with a winning performance of 2:08.55, topping Emily Tenczar (2:09.19) and Alex Downing (2:13.68), whose times were scored as exhibitions.
As the morning progressed, Mann grabbed the top spot in the 100 free with a sprint of 51.34, while Elsa Fullerton took third after clocking in at 55.39.
Moments later, Nyiradi registered her record-setting performance in the 200 back, while Liv Peebles took second with a time of 2:03.65, followed by Mering at 2:10.85, with the latter result counting as an exhibition.
The victories continued to pile up in the 500 free, where West completed the distance ahead of the pack at 5:11.29, while Allan’s second-place time of 5:13.16 was considered an exhibition.
SDSU claimed the top three positions in the 200 breaststroke, where Williams snagged the crown with a time of 2:20.08, edging Bergdahl (2:20.79), while Branca (2:24.99) took third.
Along with individual races, the Aztecs also captured both relay events to bookend the meet. The quartet of Peebles, Bergdahl, Sevin and Bispo opened with a victory in the 200 medley relay, posting a winning time of 1:45.99, while the foursome of Downing, Williams, Abby Storm and McKenna finished second with an exhibition mark of 1:49.28.
With the festivities winding down, SDSU also took care of business in the 200 free relay, where the team of Mann, McKenna, Bispo and Peebles emerged triumphant with a time of 1:35.86.
Along with Nyiradi’s and McKenna’s individual records on Saturday, the Aztecs had two relays establish Patty Center Pool standards as well on Friday, including the 400 medley relay team of Peebles, Bergdahl, Nyiradi and Bispo (3:48.33) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Mann, Bispo, Nyiradi and Bergdahl (3:30.04).
San Diego State will take an extended break from the competition pool before returning to action with a full squad next month for the Hawkeye Invitational, Nov. 21-23, in Iowa City, Iowa.

FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks swim team fell in its season opener on Friday afternoon to San Diego State, 125-75.
Both sides swam in 11 events in the Patty Center pool, beginning with the 400-yard medley relay. San Diego State took first with a winning time of 3:48.33. The Nanooks took second place as a team of Charlotte Fletcher-Stables, Dorka Dancsok, Cosima Schmiedel and Sam Bristor finished with a 3:59.53. The second Nanooks team took third place with a time of 4:14.62. The second event was the 1000-yard freestyle, which saw the Aztecs take first. Tori Shoemaker was the Nanooks top finisher, finishing second with an 11:05.62. Naomi Burgan and Kylee Carter finished third and fourth.
The Nanooks grabbed their first victory in the following event: the 200-yard freestyle, as Schmiedel finished with a 1:29.50 to lead the pack. SDSU took second, and Ali Pecore and Fletcher-Stables placed third and fourth, respectively.
San Diego State took first in the 50-yard freestyle, with Janci Pangburn finishing less than .1 seconds behind first with a 24.78. Bristor and Eva Markovic took fifth and sixth. Next, Dancsok led the way for Alaska in the 200-yard IM, posting a 2:17.78, which was good enough for third. Charisma Watkins and Mayumi Schaetzle followed in fourth and fifth.
Schmiedel finished half a second away from her second victory of the afternoon in the 100-yard butterfly, recording a time of 1:00.19 in the event. Payton Wojciechowicz and Kaidence Sampsel rounded out the top four spots for the Nanooks. San Diego State took the top two spots in the 100-yard freestyle, with Jordan O’Connor posting a 53.70 to take third. Bristor and Markovic took the following two places for Alaska.
In the eighth event of the meet, Fletcher-Stables swam to a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, recording a 59.18. O’Connor and Pangburn also raced for the Nanooks in the event, collecting fourth and fifth-place finishes. Wojciechowicz was Alaska’s top finisher in the 500-yard freestyle, taking third place with a time of 5:27.18. Shoemaker and Pecore followed in fourth and fifth.
In the penultimate event, both teams swam in the 100-yard breaststroke, with Dancsok finishing as the top Nanook with a 1:08.86, which placed the sophomore in third. Schaetzle and Sariah Rodgers finished right behind her in third and fourth.
The day concluded with a 400-yard freestyle relay, which San Diego State would win with a time of 3:30.04. The Nanooks took the following three places, with a team of O’Connor, Bristor, Pangburn and Schmiedel taking second place with a 3:39.13.
After day one of the meet, head coach Ksenia Gromova shared her thoughts on the Nanooks’ season-opener. “The first day went well. Some of the swimmers went pretty impressive times for a dual meet and the first meet of the season. We are competing against a fast Division 1 team, the goal is to have our swimmers focus on their own races and unite at their first meet together. So far, they’ve done an amazing job.”
The Nanooks return to the pool tomorrow against the Aztecs with a start time of 10 a.m. A live stream will be available on the Alaska Nanooks YouTube channel.
FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks swim team fell on the second day of its dual meet vs. San Diego State, 121-78.
The two sides once again swam 11 events on the second day of competition. The day began with the 200-yard medley relay, which saw SDSU take the top spot with a final time of 1:45.99. Alaska took the following two places, as a team of Charlotte Fletcher-Stables, Dorka Dancsok, Cosima Schmiedel and Janci Pangburn finished with a 1:49.28 for second place.
Tori Shoemaker led the way for the Nanooks in the first event, placing second in the 1,000-yard freestyle with an 11:10.09. Payton Wojciechowicz and Ali Pecore followed for the Nanooks in third and fourth. Sam Bristor took second in the 200-yard freestyle, leading all Nanook swimmers with a 2:02.68 in the event. The following event saw both teams square off in the 50-yard freestyle. Pangburn would take second as the best Nanook finisher, posting a time of 25.14.
In the fifth event, SDSU took the top two spots in the 400-yard IM, with Dancsok’s time of 4:49.56 giving her third place. Naomi Burgan and Charisma Watkins followed for the Nanooks in fourth and fifth. Schmiedel (2:15.57) took second in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing ahead of teammate Kaidence Sampsel in third. Pangburn was the highest finisher for Alaska in the 100-yard freestyle, with her time of 54.39 good for second place. Bristor and Eva Markovic took fourth and fifth place in the event.
The Aztecs finished top two in the 200-yard backstroke, while Fletcher-Stables came in third, posting a time of 2:11.73 for the Nanooks. Teammate Jordan O’Connor followed behind her in fourth place. The following event saw Pecore place second in the 500-yard freestyle, recording a 5:35.38. Burgan, Wojciechowicz and Kylee Carter followed for the Nanooks, placing third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the tenth event of the morning, Dancsok was the top finisher for the Nanooks, placing fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke and finishing with a 2:31.06. In the day’s final event, both teams swam in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with Alaska’s team of O’Connor, Bristor, Fletcher-Stables and Pangburn taking second for the Nanooks with a team-best time of 1:39.97.
“We are very proud of the team,” said head coach Ksenia Gromova following the dual meet. “They are doing so well, considering that half of the team is new this year. They get along and show an amazing unity that inspires us coaches. We’ve got 18 swimmers, and the team is very strong this year. We are very excited to see what this team can do this season!”
Alaska kicks off its PCSC schedule on Friday, November 1, with a meet against Fresno Pacific. The start time is set for 5 p.m. in the Patty Center Pool.
