Akron Women, Youngstown State Men Earn First-Place Finishes At Arkon Zips Classic

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Swimming and Diving team took a commanding lead after the first day of the Akron Zips Classic.

Akron, who leads with 459 points, is trailed by Youngstown State (255 points), Xavier University (209 points) and Denison University (168 points).

The Zips began the day by making a splash in the one-meter dive with the top three scores belonging to the Blue and Gold. Elizabeth Noble took first with a score of 274.65 while Laurel Smith finished second with a score of 263.45 and Paige Bush took third with a score of 261.20.

Akron then took the top two spots in the 400-yard medley relay. The Zips “Z” squad of Madelyn GatrallClaire CoxAbigail Daniel and Ada Szwabinska finished first with a time of 3:37.41 while the “I” team of Rebecca ReidMadelyn BoslerAislinn Holder and Felicia Klintemar finished at 3:41.79.

The 500-yard freestyle saw Elle Couture place fourth with a time of 5:01.23 while Daniel would set a new meet record in the 200-yard IM after finishing first with a time of 1:59.85. She beat teammate Rebecca Reid’s time of 2:00.15 set in 2023.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Akron took nine of the top-10 spots. Szwabinska paced the Zips with a time of 22.98, good for second. Abby Daniel finished third with a time of 22.99 for third. Olivia Oyster of Xavier finished first and set a meet record with a time of 22.69. Oyster’s time beat the previous record, 22.81, set by Akron’s Sarah Watson in 2021.

Akron capped off the first day of competition with the top two times in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The “Z” team of Klintemar, Reid, Daniel and Gatrall finished with a time of 7:22.22 for first place. The Zips “I” team of Julia Mauter, Couture, Helena Lalkovic and Brienne Trumpower finished with a timer of 7:34.16 for second place.

On the men’s side, Patrick Adams of Youngstown State set a meet record with a score of 279.90 in the three-meter dive as he bested YSU’s Cody Thill’s score of 251.25 set in 2021.

Xavier’s men’s “A” squad of Matt Fralic, Ethan Saunders, Aiden Leamer and Kyle Hudson set a meet record in the 400-yard medley with a time of 3:16.91, beating the previous mark of 3:18.12 held by Miami (OH) set in 2019.

The Zips Classic concludes tomorrow, October 12 with the first events set to begin at 10 a.m.

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron swimming and diving team concluded action at the Zips Classic with a first-place victory.

The Zips finished first with 1345 points while Xavier University finished second with 832 points, Youngstown State finished third with 762 points and Denison University finished fourth with 517.

Akron started the second day of competition claiming the top three times in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Zips “Z” squad of Ada SzwabinskaAbigail DanielRebecca Reid and Aislinn Holder finished first with a time of 1:31.71, the Zips “I” squad of Brienne TrumpowerMadelyn GatrallHannah Trainer and Callie Parkes finished second with a time of 1:32.63 while the Zips “P” squad of Dominika KossakowskaFelicia KlintemarJulia Mauter and Helena Lalkovic finished third with a time of 1:35.21.

Kendall Craig then took first in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:26.77 before the Zips would take six of the top 10 times in the 100-yard Butterfly. Daniel took first with a time of 53.69 and Klintemar finished third with a time of 55.49.

The 200-yard Freestyle saw three Zips place in the top four. Kossakowska finished first with a time of 1:49.29, Elle Couture finished third with a time of 1:51.95 and Lalkovic finished fourth with a time of 1:52.01.

Claire Cox and Madelyn Bosler finished second and third in the 100-yard Breaststroke with times of 1:02.34 and 1:02.49. Jordyn Libler of Xavier set a new meet record with the top time of 1:01.49, beating Akron’s Paula Garcia’s time of 1:02.34 set in 2019.

Akron swept the top three spots in the 100-yard Backstroke as Gatrall finished first with a time of 53.49, Reid finished second with a time of 55.16 and Mauter placed third with a time of 56.17.

The Zips took second and third in the three-meter dive, as Paige Bush placed second with a score of 267.40 and Laurel Smith placed third with a time of 261.45.

Akron claimed the top three times in the 200-yard medley relay. The Zips “Z” team of Gatrall, Cox, Daniel and Holder finished first with a time of 1:39.49, while the Zips “I” squad of Reid, Bosler, Trainer and Szwabinska finished second with a time of 1:42.28 and the Zips “P” squad of Mauter, Craig, Kossakowska and Parkes finished third with a time of 1:43.45.

Couture finished fifth in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:18.03 while the Blue and Gold would take the top three spots in the 200-yard Backstroke. Gatrall placed first with a time of 1:57.14, Reid finished second with a time of 2:01.71 and Mauter finished third with a time of 2:03.26

The 100-yard Freestyle featured the Zips taking eight of the top 10 times which was highlighted by Kossakowska finishing second with a time of 50.11 and Daniel finishing third with a time of 50.18.

Akron would once again take two of the top times as Bosler finished second in the 200-yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:14.66 and Cox finished third with a time of 2:19.35.

Kossakowska, Trainer and Addy Soehnlen finished in second, third and fourth in the 200-yard Butterfly with times of 2:02.27, 2:04.23 and 2:04.82 respectively.

The 400-Yard Freestyle Relay featured the Blue and Gold claiming the top three times. The “Z” squad of Szwabinska, Daniel, Gatrall and Kossakowska finished first with a time of 3:20.80, the “I” squad of Mauter, Klintemar, Reid and Holder finished second with a time of 3:22.55 and the “P” squad of Lalkovic, Trumpower, Parkes and Trainer finished third with a time of 3:25.64.

On the men’s side, Ethan Saunders of Xavier set a meet record in the 100-yard Breaststroke with a time of 54.62. The previous top time of 55.48 was set by Noah Barr of Miami (OH) in 2019.

Brendan Stanley of Denison set a meet record in the one-meter dive after scoring 272.30 points. The previous record was set by Kristian Kowalski, also from Denison, who scored 263.25 points in 2023.

Xavier’s “A” squad set a meet record in the 200-yard medley relay. Gage Hannewyk, Saunders, Aiden Leamer and Kyle Hudson swam a time of 1:30.06, beating the previous time of 1:30.07 set by Miami (OH) in 2019.

James Slessor of Youngstown State set a meet record in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:00.36. The previous record was a time of 2:00.52 set by Richie Kurlich of Denison in 2019.

Youngstown State also set a meet record in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay. The Penguins “A” team of Lorenz Beck, Darren Laing, Gavin Redden and Jacob Gramer finished first with a time of 3:00.56 to best the previous record of 3:00.87 set by Miami (OH) in 2019.

Akron hits the road next as it travels to Columbus, Ohio., to face Ohio State and Kentucky on October 19. Action is set to begin at 1 p.m.

The Youngstown State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams took the short trip to Akron this weekend as they competed in the two-day Akron Zips Classic.

The Penguin women picked up their first win of the weekend when junior Miriam Frass finished first in the 500 free with a time of 4:55.45. The Penguins swam very strongly in this event, as freshmen Olivia Sweetman and Morgan Glass finished second and third behind Frass.

The trio finished one-two-three in the 1650 free as well, as Frass swam a time of 16:41.22 to win the event, with Sweetman and Glass finishing right behind her.

In the three-meter dive, sophomore Hanna Held took home a first-place finish as she scored 269.80 points.

Frass also claimed a second-place finish in the 400 IM as she clocked a time of 4:28.06.

The 800 free relay squad of Frass, Madelyn Mahoney, Glass, and Sweetman finished third, clocking a time of 7:34.16, which was less than six-tenths of a second slower than the second-place team.

Senior Oliwia Kaniak and junior Eloise Fisher finished closely together in the 100 breaststroke, as Kaniak finished fourth with a time of 1:03.75, and Fisher’s time of 1:04.55 was good enough to give her a sixth-place finish.

The women finished third overall out of four teams, putting together a total team score of 762 points.

Like the women, the Youngstown State men picked up their first individual victory of the weekend in the men’s 500 free. Fifth-year Gavin Webb was victorious in the event, swimming a time of 4:32.09 to pick up the win.

The Penguin men dominated the top of the leaderboard in the 50 free, as they claimed five of the top six spots, collecting 78 points in that single event. Freshman Jacob Gramer finished first as he swam a time of 20.66, and then Rares Druga (third), Gavin Redden (fourth), Darren Laing (fifth), and Lorenz Beck (sixth) finished closely behind.

Lang and Redden swam very well in the 100 free, as Laing claimed first place with a time of 45.13, and Redden finished second, swimming a time of 45.17.

Another event that was Penguin-heavy towards the top was the 400 IM, as senior Dominic Bono claimed first place as he swam a time of 3:59.23. Joining him towards the top of the leaderboard was Gavin Webb, who finished second with a time of 4:00.63, and Terin Frodyma also finished in the top five as his time of 4:07.59 was good enough for a fourth-place finish.

Bono claimed another victory during the meet, as he finished first in the 200 backstroke after swimming a time of 1:49.17. The Penguins were well-represented towards the top of the leaderboard as Soma Albert finished second, and Ales Zupanec and Ethan Ferroni finished fourth and fifth.

Junior Brooks Adams claimed a first-place finish in the three-meter dive for the second-straight meet, as his point total of 265.60 just edged out the second-place finishing total by five-tenths of a point. The point total set a new meet record. Fifth-year Cody Thill finished third, putting together a total score of 275.60.

The sixth individual victory on the day for the Penguin men belonged to James Slessor, who’s time of 2:00.36 set a new Akron Zips Classic meet record.

The Penguin men had a strong meet when it came to relays. The 400 free relay team of Lorenz BeckDarren LaingGavin Redden, and Jacob Gramer set a new meet record as they won the event with a time of 3:00.56. The 200 free relay team of Gramer, Laing, Redden, and Rares Druga finished in first place with a time of 1:22.68, finishing just under two-tenths of a second before the second-place team from Xavier. The 400-medley relay team of Elliot ElmoreJames SlessorLorenz Beck, and Jacob Gramer had an impressive second-place finish, swimming a collective time of 3:18.00. The 200-medley relay team, which also consisted of Elmore, Slessor, Beck, and Gramer, also finished second, as the group swam a time of 1:30.08, just two-hundredths of a second slower than first place.

Gramer, Redden, and Beck also had good individual finishes in the 100 butterfly, as Gramer finished second with a time of 49.14, Redden finished third as he swam a time of 49.22, and Beck rounded out the top five as he finished with a time of 49.75.

Elmore also finished runner-up individually in the 100 backstroke, with a time of 50.54 that was just under two-tenths of a second slower than the first-place time.

Slessor and Dominic Panozzo both claimed top-five finishes in the 100 breaststroke, as Slessor finished as the runner-up in the event after swimming a time of 54.71, and Panozzo’s time of 57.18 was good enough for a fourth-place finish.

Gavin Webb also had a strong performance in the 1650 free, as his time of 16:08.98 was good enough for a third-place finish.

The men finished in first place with a point total of 1149.5 points, which was 66 points ahead of second-place Xavier. This was the second meet victory of the season for the men, as they also defeated St. Bonaventure in a dual to open the season in Youngstown on Sep. 26-27.

The Penguins will be back in action on Oct. 26 when they travel to New York for a dual with Niagara.
