Coaches were all business on deck at the Texas invite. No media attended. SwimSwam was it. USC Head Assistant Coach Jeremy Kipp was nice enough to fill us in on the Trojans’ progress and where the Trojans are headed in the coming weeks, and onward to Pac-12s and NCAAs. Jeremy Kipp, with some 15 years of collegiate swimming coach experience, is USC’s head assistant swimming coach in his seventh year at USC.
In addition to his work with USC’s sprinters, Kipp has also directed USC’s recruiting efforts for the men’s teams and played a major role on the women’s side as well, helping the Trojan staff consistently secure classes ranked among the top in the nation.
In 2012, Kipp helped mold a Trojan men’s team that featured six All-Americans (among 10 NCAA participants) and finished seventh for the second year in a row at the NCAA Championships. Vladimir Morozov earned four All-American honors and posted a second-place finish in the 50y free and a third in the 100y free. Dimitri Colupaev was second in the 200y free while Cristian Quintero was second in the 500y free. Morozov also won Pac-12 titles in the 50y and 100y free while Colupaev won the 200y free. Meanwhile, USC repeated its third-place NCAA women’s finish, boasting a squad that featured 12 All-Americans, including two-time NCAA champion Katinka Hosszu (400y IM, 200y fly), who barely missed a third title in the 200y IM (taking second). Haley Anderson won her first career NCAA title in the 500y free in addition to a third in the 1500y free. The Trojan women also won seven Pac-12 titles, including three by Hosszu and two by Anderson.
During his fourth year on the staff in 2011, Kipp’s USC sprinters clobbered the Trojan sprinting records. Morozov broke both the 50y and 100y free marks repeatedly while the men’s squad knocked down the 200y and 400y free relay records, the latter the oldest standing Trojan record. The women’s team broke the 200y free for the third year in a row and the 50y free in the past two years. Last year, the women’s squad finished third at NCAAs while the men’s team rose to seventh. The programs featured a combined 15 All-American swimmers.
In his third year with the Trojan program in 2010, Kipp helped 10 Trojan men’s swimmers qualify for the NCAA Championships, where Troy finished 11th with four All-Americans. USC’s women’s team finished seventh in 2010 and featured an NCAA squad that posted seven top 4 finishes.
In 2009, Kipp played a big part in USC’s improving sprint free corps, which included helping two swimmers break into Troy’s all-time top 10 in the 50y free. He also helped guide a six-man squad at the NCAA Championships. On the women’s side, USC featured four All-American swimmers, including two-time NCAA title winner Rebecca Soni and four-time All-American Katinka Hosszu.
In 2008, Kipp was part of a staff that helped Vanni Mangoni win the Pac-10 title in the 400y IM and that guided Richard Gosper to break the school record in the 50y free and score in the event at the NCAA Championships. He also worked with a women’s squad that had five All-Americans, including two-time NCAA champion Rebecca Soni.
In addition to his work with the Trojans, Kipp has been instrumental in the success of some of USC’s top former swimmers and members of the Trojan Swim Club. Kipp coached former Trojan great Ous Mellouli as part of the Tunisian national team coaching staff at the 2009 Mediterranean Games and helped Mellouli prepare for the 2009 World Championships. Mellouli won five golds at the Mediterranean Games and one gold and two silvers at the World Championships. Kipp also served as the national team coach for Austria at the 2009 European Championships and was the personal coach for Olympian Markus Rogan, who won the 200m IM at the meet. Kipp was also a member of Austria’s national team at the 2010 Short Course World Championships, where Markus won silver in the 200m IM and bronze in the 200m back.
He came to USC after serving eight years as an assistant coach for UC Santa Barbara men’s and women’s swimming teams. He was named associate head coach in his final quarter at UCSB before joining USC.
His focus was on the middle distance and stroke groups, where he produced numerous NCAA qualifiers. Kipp’s responsibilities also included the coordinating of recruiting as well as strength and dryland training.
Kipp sent one swimmer to the Pan Am Games, produced one All-American at UCSB and guided more than 20 swimmers to U.S. Nationals.
Kipp came to UCSB from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania where he received his bachelor’s degree in English. While at Bloomsburg, Kipp served as team captain of the swimming team and later assumed the role of assistant coach during his final year.
A club coach for eight years with Santa Barbara Swim Club, Kipp also coached and served as general manager for the Masters Swim Team there as well. Kipp also was a faculty member at UCSB in the exercise and sports science department.
Kipp received a master’s of science degree in physical education from Azusa Pacific University.
Kipp, an avid surfer, is married to the former Suzanne Bagg. They have two sons, Jonathan and Patrick.
