Orono, Maine — Haylie Calver set a new school-record in the 3-meter dive as the University of Maine women’s swimming & diving team defeated Maine Maritime Academy, 159-101, on Friday evening at Wallace Pool in the season opening meet.

Maine won nine individual events and a relay while posting several strong showings in numerous other events on the evening.

Calver’s final score of 291.23 in the 3m event broke Maine’s school record in the event. Calver also posted a winning score of 276.60 on the 1-meter board.

Mia Poirier won both the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.02) and the 100 freestyle (55.39).

Eva Welsh won the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:12.77 while posting a strong showing of 1:08.51 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Carmen Braden won the 200-yard freestyle at 1:58.42 and was the runner-up in the 50 backstroke with a time of 29.35. Kayla Loughman placed first in the 50-yard breaststroke, touching the wall at 30.78, while adding a strong showing of 1:01.00 in the 100 IM. Alicia Littler won the 100-yard backstroke with a pace-setting time of 1:03.06.

Kathleen Bendoraitis was the runner-up in the 100 fly (1:01.01) and posted an impressive mark of 5:27.55 in the 500 freestyle event. Kennady Kilger won the 50 freestyle at 24.79.

The team of Kilger, Loughman, Braden, and Hannah Deighan teamed up to win the 200 medley relay at 1:51.64 as the Black Bears swept the podium in the event.

Poirier, Deighan, Lauren Witte, and Morgan Bui posted a strong showing in the 200 freestyle relay (1:44.06).

Orono, Maine — The University of Maine men’s swimming & diving team posted nine individual victories, a relay win, and several other strong showings in its season opening, 170-97, victory over Maine Maritime Academy on Friday evening at Wallace Pool.

Maine’s team of Nick ScottZach HoppZareck Tello, and Max Ginsburg took first place honors in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:37.98. Cam Watelet, Ginsburg, Ian Mallari, and Nicholas Please posted the top time of 1:29.35 in the 200 freestyle relay.

Julian LaPietra posted gold in two events on the evening as LaPietra touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.40) and took top honors in the 100 freestyle at 48.42.

Watelet won a pair of events, posting top marks in the 100 butterfly (52.38) and the 50 backstroke (24.68).

Matthew Bendoraitis won the 200 IM at 2:02.19 and took bronze in the 50 backstroke with a time of 26.41.

Nick Patridge touched the wall first in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 27.16 and added a strong showing in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.79.

Finn Devers posted gold in the 50 freestyle (22.13) while Cooper Polzin won the 100 IM with a time of 58.31.

Liam Hood added a pair of runner-up showings (200 IM – 2:03.52, 50 backstroke 26.25) while Calvin Comeau took second in the 100 IM at 58.74 and third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:05.48.

Tello added second place showings in the 200 freestyle (1:48.40) and the 100 freestyle (49.42).

Riley Clark was strong on the boards, winning the 1m with a score of 314.40 and adding a strong showing with a mark of 302.33 on the 3m board.

ORONO, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women’s swimming and diving team raced against the University of Maine, Orono to open up the 2023-24 season. The Mariners fell to the Black Bears 101-159.

Women’s Team Highlights

  • In the 200 yard medley relay the team of Liza ZhukovAva SnyderClaire MacDonald, and Rayelle Brewer placed fifth with time of 2:07.22.
  • Brewer had a strong performance in the 50 yard freestyle, placing fifth with a time of 27.21. She had another fifth place finish in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:06.25.
  • Milo Cook-Sharp placed sixth in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:39.88.
  • Zhukov brought the Mariners another fifth place finish in the 100 yard backstroke, touching the wall at 1:11.61.
  • In the 100 yard butterfly, Claire MacDonald placed fifth with a time of 1:12.87.
  • On the diving board, Natasha Kopeck placed sixth and Emma Brondum finished right behind in seventh. Kopeck had a score of 171.90 and Brondum with 157.05 points.

ORONO, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men’s swimming and diving team opened up the 2023-24 season against the University of Maine, Orono in a Friday night non scoring meet at Wallace Pool.

Men’s Team Highlights:

  • John MarkillieAidan BurkeJace Chouinard, and Carson Trout teamed up in the 200 yard medley relay and placed fifth with a final time of 1:43.71.
  • Chouinard also had a notable finish in the 200 yard freestyle placing fourth touching the wall at 1:51.99.
  • Trout completed the 50 yard freestyle in 22.33, finishing the event in third place.
  • On the diving board, Oliver Cox placed third in the 1 mtr dive with a score of 147.90.
  • Markillie brought home another third place finish for the Mariners in the 100 yard IM with a time of 58.90.
  • In the 200 yard IM Lincoln Graf completed the event in 2:20.03 earning him fifth.

Up Next: The Mariners are back in the pool tomorrow on Oct, 21 when they travel to Bangior Maine for a match against Husson University.
