Tennessee Invite Day 2 Prelims: Kate Douglass Hits Lifetime Best 50.18 100 Fly

TENNESSEE INVITE (DOUBLE DUAL)

  • Thursday, November 19-Saturday, November 21, 2020
  • Allen Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center, Knoxville, TN
  • SCY
  • Double Dual format

UVA sophomore Kate Douglass has been on fire this weekend, and she opened today’s session with a blazing 50.18 in the 100 fly. That’s a lifetime best by .18, moving her up one spot to #10 in history, and bringing her less than a second off of the fastest time ever done, a 49.26 performed by both Louise Hansson and Maggie MacNeil.

Tonight, Douglass will have a chance to crack the 50-second barrier, which would make her just the seventh woman ever to do so. Alabama junior Rhyan White clocked a 51.86 for second behind Douglass.

White led the 100 back at the end of the session, going 51.38 and fending off Douglass by about a half-second. Backstroke is arguably Douglass’s weakest discipline, but she went under 52 seconds for the first time ever, going 51.92; that time should easily qualify her for the NCAA Championships.

Alabama sophomore and Indiana transfer Jake Marcum shot out to a lifetime best to lead the men’s 100 back prelims. He was 46.49 to edge out UVA sophomore Max Edwards (46.70), a huge improvement on his old best of 48.01. Edwards also hit a best, taking .27 off of his old PR.

Tennessee had a bunch of great swims, chief among them from freshman Mona McSharry. The Irish record-holder clocked a lifetime best 58.66 to pace the 100 breast prelims, making her the #3 performer in program history. UVA followed with three women under a minute; junior Alexis Wenger was 58.69, followed by freshmen Anna Keating (59.47) and Alex Walsh (59.58).

Lady Vol senior Alexis Yager surged to the quickest time of the morning in the women’s 400 IM, dipping below 4:10 to clock a 4:08.75 and finish ahead of UVA sophomore Ella Nelson (4:11.57) and UVA freshman Sophia Wilson (4:14.55).

OTHER NOTABLE SWIMS

  • Tennessee senior Kayky Mota posted a 45.67 for the quickest 100 fly on the men’s side by over a second. He was just .02 off of his lifetime best.
  • UVA senior Paige Madden led the 200 free field on the women’s side with a 1:44.71 ahead of Alabama junior Morgan Scott (1:45.37). ‘Hoo sophomore Jack Wright was 1:35.69 for the top time on the men’s side, with Tennessee freshman Will Jackson (1:35.93) right behind.
  • In the men’s 400 IM, UVA led with junior Casey Storch and sophomore Sean Conway, the only two under 3:50 at 3:46.80 and 3:47.07, respectively.
  • Tennessee ruled the men’s 100 breast this morning, with junior Michael Houlie (52.28) taking charge ahead of sophomore Brett Champlin (52.77) and junior Jarel Dillard (52.88).

Would be fun to see how many events she could qualify for NCAAs. I’ll bet Douglass could make 10 different events.

She easily makes the 2 free also, that would be 3 frees, 2 of each strokes + 2 IM = 11 races. She went 1:44 2free at the UVA intrasquad. Seems like she could have a shot at the 500. That would be 12.

Tennessee and Bama are swimming extremely well! I continue to be impressed with the way these athletes continue to develop under Kredich

Continuing the discussion from the other thread, I think that Douglass’s 51.9 100 back might be her worst day 2 event in the NCAA format, and it would qualify for NCAAs pretty easily. That’s fun.

Nice point. Not sure what her 4IM would look like. But if you have 1:50 IMer who has endurance to do a 2:05 breast — seems she would have to be 4:05 or better.

When youre so good at swimming that your “weakest stroke” can still qualify for NCs…

He was referring to her 51.9 100 back

I presume backstroke is her weakest stroke, but that’s based on the fact that we haven’t really seen her race it at any meet that counts. She was 52.39 in the 100 back in a dual meet last season, and was 1:57.62 in high school.

For a swimmer this good, “weakest” is relative, right? At some point, when you’re good enough, a discussion of “weakest” doesn’t carry much meaning.
