29-year-old speedster Ranomi Kromowidjojo closed out her calendar year of racing with a trio of gold medals at the 2019 Dutch Short Course Championships.
Diving in 8 times over the course day 1 in Tilburg, Kromo topped the podium in the 50m free, the 50m fly, as well as by being a member of the PSV squad’s 4x200m freestyle relay.
In the former events, her specialties, Kromo logged a 50m free time of 23.70 to represent the only racer under 24 seconds. She beat the field in the 50m fly in a time of 25.63 to also take the gold handily. Kromo also made an appearance in the 100m IM, although she finished 4th in 1:01.11 while Marjolein Delno got to the wall first in 1:00.00.
However, to cap off her evening, Kromo anchored her squad’s 800m free relay in a solid 1:57.36, the 2nd quickest split of her foursome that included Maaike de Waard (2:02.18), Maud van der Meer (1:57.30) and Kim Busch (2:03.10).
Of her having swum the 200m free, Kromo said post-race, “Who would have thought I’d be Dutch champion in the 4x200m free? Never say never.”
On the men’s side, visiting Norwegian World Championships silver medalist Henrik Christiansen did damage in the 1500m free, clocking a time of 15:20.08 to win by over 13 seconds. In the process, however, the 23-year-old freestyle ace logged a meet record in the 800m via his 7:29.39 split.
In fact, his 7:29.39 outing overtook his own Norwegian national record of 7:33.28 he put on the books at November’s Norwegian Short Course Championships. Look for an additional post on this swim.
Additional Winners:
- Ties Elzerman stopped the clock in 26.59 to produce the only sub-27 effort in the men’s 50m breast for gold.
- The men’s 200m fly saw Maarten Brzoskowski earn a winning time of 1:53.69 to top the podium by one second.
- Kyle Stolk logged the fastest time in the men’s 100m IM in 52.51, a new meet record. Also landing on the podium with the bronze was Kenzo Simons, who notched a new Dutch Age Record for 18-year-olds in 54.47.
- Luc Kroon hit the wall in a time of 1:43.79 to nail the gold in the men’s 200m free. That checked in as the Dutch national age record for 18-year-olds and included splits of 50.99 and 52.80.
