Kelsi Worrell Sets NCAA Meet Record with 2nd Fastest 200 Fly Ever

Louisville’s Kelsi Worrell slipped under the NCAA meet record in the women’s 200 fly this morning, clocking a 1:50.61 to take the top seed after prelims. The previous record was held by Stanford’s Elaine Breeden. Breeden held the mark at 1:50.98 from NCAAs in 2009.

Worrell was a half second faster than she was in finals at last year’s NCAAs, where she won the event in 1:51.11. Most of that improvement came on the 2nd 50, where she was a 27.98 compared to a 28.56 in her previous best swim. Worrell faded on the last 50, closing in 29.24. She has room for improvement there, and she’ll be pushed by Stanford’s Ella Eastin, who’s been on fire this meet.

1st 50 2nd 50 3rd 50 4th 50 By 100 Time
Worrell 2015 24.99 28.56 28.37 29.19 53.55/57.59 1:51.11
Worrell 2016 Prelims 25.04 27.98 28.35 29.24 53.02/57.59 1:50.61

That swim was the 3rd fastest of all time, and makes her the 2nd fastest performer ever in the event. Worrell previously sat 3rd on the all time top performers list with her time from last season, but jumped over Katinka Hosszu (1:51.02) with her time this morning. Elaine Breeden is still at the top with her 1:49.92 from 2009.

Worrell, probably under 1:50 in the final but a battle for 2nd place since Flickinger is also in the top 10 with Eastin. Probably one of the best 200 yard fly finals.
