UNC Set To Renew Long-Standing Rivalry With Virginia

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will return to action Saturday when the Tar Heels play host to the University of Virginia at Maurice J. Koury Natatorium.  The meet begins at 12 p.m. and admission is free.

These two schools have one of the longest-standing rivalries in the South.  The Tar Heel men are 42-20 overall against UVA and have won two dual meets in a row against the Cavaliers.  The Tar Heels women are 25-15 overall against the Wahoos after winning in Charlottesville last year – Carolina’s first dual meet win in the series since 2007.  Action last year took place on January 24, 2015 with the UNC women winning 156.5-143.5 and the Tar Heel men recording a 192-106 victory.

Going into Saturday’s meet, the UNC men are 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the ACC while being ranked #18 in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America poll.  The Tar Heel women are 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the ACC and are currently #14 in the CSCAA poll.

Virginia will face NC State in Raleigh on Friday at 5 p.m. prior to going head-to-head with the Tar Heels on Saturday.  The UVA women are ranked #3 nationally (6-0 overall, 3-0 ACC) and the #21 UVA men are 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the ACC.

The Wahoos are coming off dual meets with Towson and Virginia Tech last weekend where UVA’s women won both meets and the UVA men split.  The Carolina meet on Saturday is the season finale for Virginia prior to the start of championship season.

UNC returns to action for the first time since January 9 when it swept Navy at Koury Natatorium.  After hosting Virginia on Saturday, UNC will face Triangle area rivals the following weekend.  UNC hosts NC State January 29 and swims at Duke January 30.

While the results of the men’s meet may be skewed in one direction, do NOT sleep on this young Virginia team come ACCs, NCAAs and the years to come. They are only a few years behind the women…the dynasty that was Virginia Swimming will live on once again.
