There are 5 Speedo Sectional meets taking place around the country this week, some of which are LCM and some of which are SCY. The Ithaca Sectional is a SCY meet that has attracted a lot of East coast teams, but several teams from the Midwest as well. The meet began last night with a distance session, featuring the women’s 1650 free and the men’s 1000 free.

Peddie Aquatic Association 16-year-old Maddy Brennan won the women’s 1650 free decisively, swimming a 16:33.45. The performance represents a truly massive personal best for Brennan, taking a stunning 51 seconds off her previous best of 17:24.55, which she swam at the Winter Juniors East meet just a few months ago. Brennan put together a very consistent race last night, splitting 4:57.82 on the opening 500, 5:04.48 on the 2nd 500, and 5:02.63 on the 3rd 500, before coming home in 1:28.62 on the final 150 yards.

In the men’s 1000 free, Chelsea Piers Aquatic Club 18-year-old Rory O’Connor swam a 9:07.37 to win the race. A Brown recruit, O’Connor took nearly 7 seconds off his career best of 9:14.10, which he set a few months ago. Charles River Aquatics’ Alex Barone, 16, had a great swim as well, taking 2nd in 9:09.49. That marked an improvement of 4.14 seconds from his previous best.
