Cumberland Valley’s Ava Buhrman shined on day three of the Christiansburg Sectionals, winning the 500 free in a personal best time of 4:50.55. The 14-year-old’s performance marked the 5th-fastest time this season in the 13-14 girls 500; while Buhrman was already in the #5 spot, she lowered the standard by another .14.

In addition to her victory in the 500 free, Buhrman took 4th in the 50 free in 23.53 on Saturday, adding .41 to her lifetime best.

The runner-up behind Buhrman in the 500 was Northern Kentucky’s Clare Herfel, who previously won the 1650 free. The 500 saw Herfel race into the wall in a lifetime best time of 4:50.80, just .25 behind Buhrman. Her performance shaved .42 off of her previous best and landed Herfel at #34 on the ranking of top times this season in the 15-16 age group.

The boys 500 free title went to Trevor Olson, as the Lancaster Aquatic Club swimmer continued to dominate the freestyle events. Olson turned in a time of 4:27.13, just over a second off of his lifetime best, to add to his collection of victories.

Olson already won the 200 and 1000 free earlier in the meet.

H2okie Aquatics seems to be largely in control of the relays on the girls’ side, having won two of the three relay events thus far. After winning the 800 free relay on Friday, H2okie prevailed in the 400 free relay thanks to the team of Jillian Wiersema, Leah Santos, Evelyn Grim and Caitlin Fillo. The group threw down a time of 3:29.18 to secure the victory by over two seconds.

The boys 200 medley relay saw Dragon Swim Team pick up its first win of the meet; the team of Jason Xin, Kyle Li, Kyle Gadsby and Omar Mourad posted a time of 1:32.40, narrowly beating out H2okie Aquatics behind them.
