2022 Honorable Mention Matthew Lucky Verbally Commits to Northwestern

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Harrisburg, North Carolina native Matthew Lucky has announced on social media his intention to swim at Northwestern University in the class of 2026.

“B1G things are coming! I am excited to finally announce my commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at Northwestern University. I want to thank my family, friends, and coaches for helping me along the journey. #gocats 😼💜”

A USA Swimming Scholastic All-American at Concord High School, Lucky made the Honorable Mention section of our list of top 20 boys recruits from the high school class of 2022. He is a 54.5/1:57 breaststroker who has been on a rapid improvement streak over the last year. As a sophomore at the North Carolina High School 3A State Championships in February 2020, he went 56.49 to win the 100 breast. In October 2020, he knocked his PB down to 56.13 at the Back to the GAC Invitational. A month later, he was 55.10 at the STAR Fall Splash & Dash. Next, he defended his high school state title in February 2021, this time going 54.59 to break the NCHSAA 3A state record. Finally, in March 2021 at Cary Sectionals, he went 54.57 to place third.

His 200 breast has followed a similar trajectory. In March 2019 at Age Group Zones, he went 2:01.18 to win the event. In the fall of 2020, swimming at the Sailfish October Surprise Intersquad, he took his PB down to 2:00.79. And at Cary Sectionals this past March, he lowered his time to 1:57.73 and earned a third-place finish.

Lucky swims year-round with Sailfish Aquatics. He competed this summer at Speedo Summer Championships-East and finaled in the 100 breast (26th), 200 breast (17th), and 200 IM (28th). He finished the meet with new PBs in the LCM 100 breast (1:04.65), 100 fly (57.44), and 200 IM (2:07.85). His best LCM 200 breast time (2:18.65) came out of Time Trials at Cary Sectionals.

Best Times:

  • 200 breast – 1:57.73
  • 100 breast – 54.57
  • 200 IM – 1:48.95
  • 100 fly – 48.80
  • 200 fly – 1:49.44

Lucky will join the Wildcats with Tona Zinn. Lucky will bolster the Wildcats’ breaststroke group, whose top performers from last season, Kevin Houseman (51.75/1:55.11) and Marcus Mok (52.99/1:54.06), will be seniors. Northwestern scored once in the A final and once in the B final of the 100 breast, and twice in the B final of the 200 breast, at 2021 B1G Championships. Lucky, as well as incoming freshman Tyler Lu (55.48/1:59.05), should relieve some of the pressure of rebuilding that breaststroke group.
